The Story

Nicolaus Stanitski, a Henschke ancestor, originally planted the Hill of Grace vineyard during the 1860s above the Barossa Valley. During the 1950s Cyril Henschke took his family concern back to wine and established the Hill of Grace label in 1956. Vintage 1963

A hot, dry year with average rainfall in the growing season and a wet January and April produced some very good red wines tending towards a lighter style.

In 1963 there were 7,174 hectares of vines in the Barossa and 22,203 tonnes of wine grapes were crushed in that vintage.

Written Notes

This was regarded as a difficult year because of the low rainfall but Sophie Otten and I loved it. Lively crimson with wonderful vigour and freshness on the nose. Saltiness and wonderful transparency. Still communicating. Seems so youthful! Positively frisky. Less concentrated than some but beautifully balanced. Not for long keeping in the glass though.
