The Story

Charme is a rare wine from the Douro, its elegance and complexity combined with the smooth tannins are unique in expressing old sheltered vineyards from Vale Mendiz in the heart of the Douro area in the Pinhão Valley. All the small details involving the production of Charme turn the final result very difficult to achieve. In the end, only the best barrels are chosen to be bottled as Charme.

Wine Information

The weather conditions of the viticultural year 2015 were very favourable, with sun, heat and low humidity, allowing a homogeneous vegetative growth.

The winter, with rain from March, has replaced a large part of water reserves in the soil. In early spring average temperatures were high and some rain completed the water replacement, allowing a balanced sprouting. After flowering in May, the veraison began in July, rather homogeneous, about two weeks earlier than in the previous year.

One of the particular features of this viticultural year was the vineyard ability to remain hydrated during ripening. In late August, early September, the basal leaves still remained green and moist, with hydrated berries and a thick, firm skin. The balance of musts, the softness of tannins, and the intense colour concentration indicate that this is an exceptional year for Doc Douro Wines.

Vale de Mendiz

Harvest started early in V. Mendiz on 28th August after a very hot July and August, the first grapes harvested were for Charme and for port wine in the V. Mendiz area from cooler north facing vineyards. The hotter classic port vineyards were exhibiting a certain heat stress, but with the onset of cooler nights maturity advanced in the first few weeks of September under fine conditions and the wines exhibit hard tannins and a lot of colour. Yesterday however there was an intense rain shower so we stopped picking, hopefully within a few days the weather will clear up and fine tune the remaining grapes so as to complete the harvest. At this point our top vineyards have already been harvested but we have only harvested 40% of the vineyards — time will tell — but the year shows a lot of promise so far!

Quinta de Baixo

The winter 2014-15 was mild and with little rainfall, however during spring, in April and May, the rainfall was high, which led to a careful and rigorous intervention in the vineyard.

High temperatures in the following months allowed a balanced ripening.

The ripening control in early August confirmed that 2015 would be a precocious year. The harvest began on 25 August, a week earlier than the previous year and ended on 14 September, demonstrating an increase in production of close to 20%.

This year it is foreseen the continuity of wines with a balanced profile, great freshness and low alcohol content.

The winter 2014-15 was mild and with little rainfall. From early spring to mid-summer, the weather conditions with low humidity and a lot of sun gave rise to some stress in the vineyard, which eventually has stood up well to a very dry year in Dão.

In early August the ripening control showed that 2015 would be a precocious year. The harvest began on 31 August, a week earlier than the previous year.

The harvest ended on 15 September, demonstrating an increase in production of close to 40%.

The wines presented a perfect acidity, with degrees between 11,5 and 12,5, so the wines are expected to be fine, elegant and with great longevity.

Written Notes

The 2015 Charme is a field blend, particularly Tinta Roriz and Touriga Franca, aged for 15 months in used French barriques. It comes in at 13.6% alcohol. This is Niepoort's occasionally quixotic tribute to Burgundy. This is a good vintage for it, though. Elegant and bright, with fine flavor and texture, this is bursting with flavor. There are fresh raspberries everywhere, the tension on the finish easily lifting the fruit. It finishes with another wave of flavor, exuberant in its youth. This is, as always, understated in some ways, too, showing fine mid-palate finesse. This is probably my favorite vintage of this brand in awhile. It may be entitled to an uptick if it develops well. It may do better in terms of aging than suggested, as Niepoort hopes, but let's take that in stages. In the meanwhile, it should be approachable young, but give it a couple of years if you can.

Part of this new issue is assessing the new 2016 Branco vintage. In terms of whites, Niepoort said he was not sure which he preferred, leaning to the 2016s, but he preferred 2015 in both reds and ports. (Granting that everyone's terroir is different and different picking decisions may color views, too, I lean to the 2015s overall.) Although many of these were not yet bottled, it looks to me like 2015 is one of Niepoort's best vintages in Tintos. The Ports weren't too shabby, either—those are separately reviewed this issue. They are among the stars of the vintage.

Light red in colour, with clean fruit aromas of cherries and raspberries accompanied by a subtle rustic character in the background. On the palate, the wine’s purity of fruit is the dominant note with great freshness, balance and structure. At this stage the youthful fruit is still very much in the foreground, but its firm underlying structure suggests that this wine will also age well.

Good looking normal size bottle. Colour is cherry red, and looking clear and light. On the nose it is open, youthful and rich. The taste is fresh, fruity, elegant, silky, and dry, with medium tannin, with silky tannins, and average in acidity, full-bodied, with perfectly balanced, well-structured, well-integrated structure and youthful. On the palate it is layered and has blackberry, blueberry, violet, spice and toasty flavours. The finish is long, smooth and flavorful. This wine is sophisticated and excellent. I paid around 30-50€ a bottle. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 10-15 years. Good value for money. I do recommend.
