1900 Niepoort Colheita Port – (bottled 1972) – amazingly the nose on this is the most complex of the night, on the palate killer (in a good way) acids, rosemary and mint, toffee, espresso, bitter almond, orange rind, an intense lingering sweetness, continually unfolds…like unfolding origami! A brilliant expression of a Colheita, so incredibly strong for a 112 year old wine…as strong as many wines 40 years younger, another nearly perfect wine. ...

The Story

Colheitas are dated Tawnies aged in small casks. The minimum age requirement is 7 years, but the tradition at Niepoort is to age several more years before bottling. The wine takes on a Tawny hue. Wood and nutty tones are evident on the palate due to the wine’s slow ageing in old casks. Colheita goes well with dry fruits desserts and the portuguese "Leite Creme queimado". As a starter, the combination with foie gras is impressive.

Wine Information

Vinification 1900
In this memorable year of the beginning of the 20th century, it snowed in the Douro region in February and March and the vines were one month delayed, in its cycle, when spring arrived. The weather warmed up in mid-April, but the temperatures only increased in late July, beginning of August, when temperatures reached 42 °C. In the 2nd half of August the weather cooled down and the rain fell for 10 days. During harvest it als...

Vintage 1900

Port Vintage Report: A great Vintage, in terms of quality and quantity. Delicate and harmonious wines though with less colour and body than the more famous Vintages. Almost all companies declared production. Late harvest, in late September and early October, with good weather after a few days of rain.

Declared by almost all producers, Ernest Cockburn said the wines showed “great delicacy with appreciable breed, and though lighter in colour ...

Written Notes

Big year both in quality and crop. Delicate wines with balance although less colour and structure than in most classic vintages. It snowed in the region in February and March. The warm weather only got to the region at the end of July. The harvest started in the third week of September. Excellent bottle. Gift from Dirk Niepoort. Decanted two hours. Bright, moderately deep brick red colour with brown tints. Pronounced clean nose with deliciously rich – cacao, chocolate, roasted nut, almonds, and dried fruits. Sweet medium-bodied palate with delightfully refreshing acidity, maderized but still intense flavours of dried fruits. The alcohol is integrated extremely well in the palate. Long sticky finish. Like a sweet that you just do not want to finish, ever. This Colheita 1900 offers a great deal of structure. Layers of complexity rush over the palate with delightfully smooth texture and yet it is still such a vibrant wine considering its age.

Intense mahogany colour. Opulent nose with slightly ethereal character, candied sugar, prunes, hints of candied chestnuts, floral hints in the background. On the palate fine acidity, elegant tannins, refined sweetness, dried fruits and candied orange peel. A great wine with incredible length.

Bottled in England, 1972. Walnut brown. Delicate, seriously senior but not too old on the nose – notable volatility. A little medicinal, touch of polish. Aged bitter marmalade and walnuts and so rich in the middle and long and fresh. Amazingly full of life and energy. More masculine and savoury and not as fine as the 1912. (JH)
