The Story

Vintage Port maintains Niepoort's tradition of making balanced Ports with great concentration, being at the same time fine and delicate. We strongly believe we can make a Vintage Port with potencial to last for decades. Vintage Port must be bottled within two or three years of the harvest date.

The magic of Vintage Port is different in every phase: as a young wine it captures the youthful fruit characters. Then, after 20 years or more, the effects of the slow bottle age integration are revealed and finally, after many decades, the spirit dominates the wine. Vintage Port is amazing in all the three phases. Half sweet taste, combining with its strong structure. Firm and long tannins, but balanced as a whole. Please, note that Vintage Port needs to be decanted. Perfect with "Queijo da Serra", Stilton or other blue cheeses and with egg desserts, like the portuguese "Pão de Ló".

Vintage 1970

Port Vintage Report: An exceptional quality Vintage, with great fruit and tannin harmony, ensuring longevity. Almost all producers declared production. A lot of rain in January and February, followed by a cold and dry March. The weather started to become hot in April, favouring good blooming and grape maturity. Rain in August and at the beginning of September, but the harvest was made under dry and very hot weather, with the temperature reaching 45¨C in certain areas. Very mature wines.

Generally declared, 1970 was an outstanding vintage with ripe fruit flavours and concentrated tannins, great balance and structure. Certainly one of the absolute finest Vintage Ports of the 50 years up to 1970.  Now mature, it is probably one of the finest glasses of port that you will ever taste. A wine of this quality, from the best houses, will age superbly for many decades to come.

Written Notes

Garnet red colour. Expressive nose with aroma reminiscent of prunes, plum jam, hints of Marzipan, bitter chocolate, discreet spiciness. On the palate well structured with opulent character, fine sweetness, typical dried fruit flavour and discreet spiciness. A great wine with depth and class in excellent balance.

Really perfumed - cedarwood and cigar box. Cedarwood and sandalwood and cinnamon - incense-like. Rich and generous on the palate.

Good looking normal size bottle. Colour is ruby red and medium. On the nose it is intense, complex, seductive, generous and charming. The taste is fresh, rich, fragrant, vivid, refined, with medium tannin ., with silky tannins, and average in acidity, full-bodied, with perfectly balanced structure and youthful. On the palate it is layered and has floral, raspberry, cherry, mineral and perfumed flavours. The finish is long, lingering, flavorful and vibrant. This wine is impressive and outstanding. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 1-5 years and decant at least 45min before tasting. I do recommend.
