Vintage 2021

2021 was a clear reminder that while the Douro is undoubtedly being shaped by the impacts of climate change, the weather continues to be unpredictable. Following a succession of very hot and dry years in the Douro, the 2021 growth cycle and harvest were some of the coolest in recent years. The region experienced an unusually cool summer with none of the heat waves that have become common. Moderate conditions in 2021 encouraged slower, gradual maturations with balanced ripening, while the harvest was defined by three key periods of rain.

Written Notes

Very bright yellow colour with green hue. Elegant nose with fine toasting aroma, ripe pear and juicy greengage. On the palate well-balanced with fine fruit, zesty character, elegance, and freshness with very good length.

  • 90p

This Redoma is an outstanding example of the Douro Valley’s potential to produce crisp, linear and uncomplicated white wines without underplaying the unmistakable complexity of the old vines, the terroir and the mica-schist soils of this region.

Fresh and delicate on the nose, this wine’s complexity and character is supported by a subtle fruity profile with notes of citrus and pineapple, floral nuances as well as herbaceous and nutty hints.

The palate shows good structure and excellent acidity, following through to a dry and piquant finish. This Douro white delights with its fantastic balance and ageing potential.

The 2021 vintage produced larger yields than expected. At Quinta de Nápoles, this meant an increase of 50% as compared to the previous year.

The 2021 harvest began on 11 August, with ideal indicators: musts with high acidity levels, low alcohol as well as beautifully firm skin on the berries made for well-balanced red and white wines.

Some instability in the weather during the month of September led to our cellars receiving an exceptionally large number of bunches, with various levels of ripeness according to their geographical origins.

The grapes stem from old vines growing on the right bank of the Douro River, at an altitude of 400 to 600 metres above sea level. These vines predominantly grow in mica-schist soils, which, in combination with the complexity of the various grape varieties typical of the Douro region, create delicate wines full of freshness and minerality.

After being meticulously sorted on our sorting table, the fruit was gently pressed and left to settle for about 24 hours. Alcoholic fermentation took place spontaneously, in 228L and 500L French oak barrels, where the wine also aged for 8 months.
