The Story

Richebourg is a king of a wine: the colonnade of the Louvre, the Château of Versailles. You are impressed by its finesse, its length and its delicate sensations, endlessly changing. The fact that no element dominates the others enables you to appreciate all of its aromas, on the nose and on the palate. In any given vintage, Richebourg is always one of the last wines to be drunk. Written Notes

The 1956 Richebourg Grand Cru is poured from a bottle sent by Aubert de Villaine to apologize for his absence. Now, this was an appalling growing season and, to my memory, I cannot ever remember tasting a wine from 1956. Nevertheless, it had a pretty bouquet with simple red berry fruit, a little floral in style with a hint of brown sugar. The palate is elegant and sporting good weight, something akin to a mature Nebbiolo and though it is missing the arching structured of a Richebourg on the finish, this is still perfectly enjoyable. There was some discussion about how much this would have been chaptalized, though after six decades, that might be rather moot! Tasted at the La Paulée in Beaune.
