The Story

R.D. (Recently Disgorged) is the result of a great vision of Madame Bollinger, R.D. is a magnification of the very best that the Champagne region’s terroir has to offer. R.D. starts as a Grande Année, the prestige cuvée of Bollinger, and is allowed to mature for an extra 8 to 20 years, sometimes more. This special aging allows the wine to maintain a unique combination of freshness and vivacity, while developing delicate and complex aromas. The result is a unique style of its own that is highly acclaimed by Bollinger lovers and true wine connoisseurs. The disgorgement date - clearly stated on the back label - is informational. It does not mean that R.D. should be consumed soon afterwards. Much to the contrary, the R.D. wines are characterized by an impressive capacity to age, not only before, but also after the date of disgorgement.

Vintage 1985

Severe winter temperatures and spring frosts did great damage, leaving many in the region unhopeful of a good year. The destruction was excessive especially in the northern Montagne de Reims, in the hillside vineyards west of Reims and in the Aube. The early summer weather did not raise the hopes, but finally fine September weather came to the rescue and yields ended up being better than feared (albeit tiny, 6,827 kg/ha) when picking commenced on September 30th. Champagnes from 1985 are typically beautifully balanced and intense with great length and character that is still improving today. Dom Pérignon, Charles Heidsieck Champagne Charlie and Blanc des Millénaires, Krug Vintage and Perrier-Jouët Belle Époque excelled, to name a few.

Written Notes

The 1985 RD was, for me, definitely the pick of the pair and sat comfortably with the top wines of the day. Vanilla, coffee bean, caramel and a character that was very much ginger ale. The mushrooms of the Grand Annee had transformed into truffles here. Mature, complex, hedonistic and with great depth, intensity and balance, loved this. And still alive, though to be honest, if it is in your cellar, hard to see it getting any better. 98 (and if you think I am scattering high scores like confetti at a wedding, you are probably right – I might have been prepared to give a mug of cold coffee 96 by this stage, such was the infectious enthusiasm, but I like to think that the scores are all fair).

Surprisingly little true R. D. character, yet with a delicate flowery bouquet that hints at more Chardonnay than is actually the case. A fresh, fruity flavor, rich in nuances, with a stifled, underlying power that reveals its origin in the end. Creamy and beautifully elusive in the magnum, with extreme depth. Since the autumn of 2003, more gamy and mushroomy. Now very elegant.

Disgorged 7 March 2011. Exceptionally cold winter destroyed many vines, especially Pinot Noir. Spring frosts too made yields extremely variable. Some second generation berries were harvested. Musts judged very similar to those in 1975. 65% Pinot Noir. 20 villages. 65% grands crus. Yields 1,000-13,000 kg/ha. Initial potential alcohol 9.6%, TA 8.7 g/l.
Another vintage that was not shown in London last year. Deep, slightly orangey gold. Rather delicate and gossamer-like for a Bollinger on the nose. Then relatively sweet and creamy. This finishes dry and shows considerable acidity – perhaps not one of the weightiest. Open – reminds me a bit of the 1995. Relatively easy and uncomplicated for a Bollinger RD.
