The Story

R.D. (Recently Disgorged) is the result of a great vision of Madame Bollinger, R.D. is a magnification of the very best that the Champagne region’s terroir has to offer. R.D. starts as a Grande Année, the prestige cuvée of Bollinger, and is allowed to mature for an extra 8 to 20 years, sometimes more. This special aging allows the wine to maintain a unique combination of freshness and vivacity, while developing delicate and complex aromas. The result is a unique style of its own that is highly acclaimed by Bollinger lovers and true wine connoisseurs. The disgorgement date - clearly stated on the back label - is informational. It does not mean that R.D. should be consumed soon afterwards. Much to the contrary, the R.D. wines are characterized by an impressive capacity to age, not only before, but also after the date of disgorgement.

Vintage 1988

CHAMPAGNE: From this year, the most classic and refined champagnes were producedChampagnes are long-lived and mature slowly to their peak.

Winter and spring were fairly mild. Inflorescences began in good weather in June. Already during the next month, the cloud masses swarmed to the Champagne province. Finally, the sky broke right before harvest. The harvest remained smaller than in the previous year. Even though the weather was unstable, the vintage produced fine and elegant wines, of which many have just reached their peak. The wines are marked by high acids and a concentrated, precise style. A real classic vintage. There is no rush to enjoy these wines, as they endure storage well and will continue to develop well for the next 10–12 years. Indicative of a slowly maturing vintage is that Krug released to the market first the Clos du Mesnil 1989 vintage before the 1988 vintage. This year has also stayed in mind as the vintage when Jacquesson & Fils produced the first of its three late bottled special cuvées – the Jacquesson DT (Dégorgement Tardif).

Written Notes

Tried this at the Bolly tasting through the generosity of Paul Boothby, who brought it along. What a privilege! The more I see of the 1988 vintage, even well over twenty years on, the more I think it is one of the absolute greats. Very much understated at the time, with some serious acidity, it has never stopped improving. This one had been disgorged in 2000 so a mix of ageing on lees and also on cork. Deep colour, this was an amazingly complex wine. Brassy citrus notes. Waves of a creamy texture. A whiff of a gentle and pleasant smoky note. Then hints of toast and honey. Slowly, wonderful touches of truffle and mushrooms started to appear. Just a wonderful wine and an amazing texture. If you could taste gold, this is surely what it would be like. 97

Classic Bollinger style is evident here, with hazelnut, bread, mushrooms, and smoke. The wine, on the other hand, has hardly benefited from its late disgorging. This wine will be exciting to see when it reaches its peak. Beautifully delicious and nutty in a magnum. Just getting better and better each time I taste it.

A jero of 1988 Bollinger RD was very good; lemony, bready, yeasty, zesty, zippy and clean, it was nice but a touch simple as RD’s can be.
