Crimson. Very refined, complex, tight-knit nose. Dusty, five spice – not at all over the top. Refined. Very elegant. Yet it has lots still to give and is really very savoury. Maybe slightly dry on the end for now.

A deep brooding spicy perfumed bouquet of plums, prunes, licorice and blackberries supported by hints of vanillin and eucalypt. A rich intense and complex palate with soft silky textured tannins, a fine acidity giving excellent depth and length.

Due to a mild dry summer there was quite a late, slow start to vintage. March tempera- tures were mild to high, which had a dramatic affect causing everything to ripen at once. The fruit quality was just fantastic, with below average yields and fabulous colours, flavours and acid balance in the reds. The 1994 was one of our best years on record.

A mild, dry summer gave quite a late, slow start to vintage which, followed by a fortnight’s hot weather, saw everything ripen at once. Excellent fruit quality with below-average yields. Deep colour. Intense, creamy choco-liquorice blackberry aromas with strong but beautifully focussed savoury/malt new oak. Plush deep concentrated wine tightened up by pronounced tannins and a fair whack of oak. The flavours are rich with choco-cherry fruit flavours and plenty of fresh savoury walnutty nuances, finishing minerally and long. 18.5 points (93/100).
