The Story

Krug Clos du Mesnil, a very rare Champagne, showcases the unique character of a single plot of Chardonnay, harvested in a single year. Our 1.84-hectare vineyard overlooked by the village church has been protected by walls since 1698. The vineyard is located in the heart of Mesnil-sur-Oger, one of the most iconic villages for Chardonnay in the Champagne region. Krug Clos du Mesnil has an expansive generous personality enhanced by the finish whi...

Vintage 2009

This warm year started with a cold winter and mild spring temperatures. Early summer was variable but August and September provided ample sunshine and warmth contributing to fine grape health. Pinot Noir especially excelled. Grape harvest, of generally high sugar content yet soft acidity, started on September 8th. 2009 is a year of generous wines that showed well early. Written Notes

Krug’s 2009 Blanc de Blancs Clos du Mesnil is showing exceptionally well. While 2009 was marked by a warm, sun-drenched growing season, its profile appears far more balanced when viewed alongside hotter recent vintages like 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2022. Harvesting began on September 10, with picking conducted across five to six separate passes to capture exact parcel-by-parcel ripeness, followed by individual pressing and vinification.

In the glass, it opens with a pristine bouquet of lemon oil, crisp green apple, fresh peach, and oyster shell, woven with delicate white spring blossoms. Medium- to full-bodied, elegantly structured, and tightly coiled on the palate, its blocking of malolactic fermentation drives a vibrant, electric acidity that allows Le Mesnil’s distinctive terroir to shine through the warmth of the vintage. Precise and chiseled with a soft, pillowy mousse, it finishes with incredible length, a salty mineral streak, and a fine citrus lift
