This sunny and hot drought year with record heat levels across Europe led to a very early harvest, which began on September 1st. Large yields (averaging 10,359 kg/ha) of super ripe fruit produced rich and powerful champagnes, although relatively low in acidity (averaging 7.2 g/l). Written Notes
A touch lighter than expected, considering the house and the vintage. The hazelnut aromas and smoke tones are weaker than usual. The '76 relies instead upon a polished citrus fruitiness. Unusually short aftertaste. Delightful in a magnumbut mdeirised in regular bottle when last tasted. Fantastic still when the bottle comes directly from Bollinger.
Extremely hot and dry vintage yielding concentrated wines. This late disgorged wine expresses the vintage well. Golden-yellow colour with modest amount of small bubbles. Very complex and rich nose with strong yeast aromas. Lovely Bollinger style with ripe apple notes combining well with the smoky aromas.
Dry and crisp wine with delicate mousse and edgy acidity. Great depth of flavours thanks to the long ageing “sur lie”. Lingering long, spicy, smoky, and lemony mineral finish. Drinking superbly now, but will keep easily over a decade more.
Bollinger R.D. 1976 /“Every one of my encounters with this wine has been a slight disappointment, but then again expectations fly really high for the vintage. The earlier disgorgements have had a really sweet appearing nose with candied fruit and patisserie notes. Mouth-filling, super ripe, chunky palate short of energy. It feels like its best days are already gone. From a very recent 2012 disgorged bottle if was still fully vibrant, with a peculiar combination of aged and youthful characters. Probably still recovering from the shock of such late disgorgement.”
