Vintage 2014

This year was all about alternating weather patterns. A particularly wet winter gave way to a warm and dry spring. May saw some rain, and even though late June-brought about a minor heatwave, the remainder of the summer was moist and murky. Disease pressure was lifted but once again fine, hot September weather was able to save and concentrate the crop. A large crop (11,553 kg/ha) was picked from September 8th onwards. The year's biggest proble...

Written Notes

A fine golden hue with coppery undertones, exuding richness and character. The fine, energetic bubbles rise in a steady stream, hinting at the champagne's vitality and power.

The bouquet is bold, complex, and deeply expressive, a true testament to Bollinger's unique style. Aromas of red and black fruits—wild cherry, black currant, and raspberry—are unusually vivid for a Blanc de Noirs, underscored by layers of dried apricot and orange marmalade. As the wine breathes, savory notes of truffle, forest floor, and leather emerge, intertwined with toasted hazelnuts, cocoa nibs, and a touch of smoky minerality.

On the palate, La Côte aux Enfants 2014 is a powerful and captivating experience. It opens with an intense burst of ripe plum, blackberry, and blood orange, balanced by a vibrant acidity that keeps it fresh and lively. The mid-palate is layered with a velvety texture, revealing deeper notes of caramelized figs, black tea, and toasted brioche.

A chalky minerality provides structure, while a subtle salinity adds intrigue. Hints of anise, dark chocolate, and a touch of clove spice lend complexity to the finish, which is long, bold, and memorable.

This Blanc de Noirs is a masterclass in power and precision. Made exclusively from Pinot Noir, it showcases the intensity and depth of fruit from the famed La Côte aux Enfants vineyard. The taut acidity and robust structure ensure both vibrancy and ageing potential, while its richness and depth reflect the hallmark qualities of Bollinger.

While already a fascinating champagne, it is clear that this 2014 vintage has the potential to evolve beautifully over the next 10–20 years. With time, expect the fruit to soften and integrate further, while the tertiary notes of truffle, spice, and nuts become more pronounced, creating a champagne of unparalleled complexity and depth.

This champagne’s bold character makes it an excellent partner for equally robust dishes. Pair it with duck confit, venison carpaccio, or slow-roasted pork with a fig glaze. It also shines alongside earthy vegetarian dishes, such as wild mushroom risotto or roasted root vegetables with truffle oil. For a decadent finish, try it with dark chocolate truffles or a spiced fig tart.

The Bollinger La Côte aux Enfants Blanc de Noirs 2014 is a champagne of exceptional power, depth, and individuality. It is both a tribute to the uniqueness of the La Côte aux Enfants vineyard and a bold expression of Bollinger’s uncompromising craftsmanship. Complex, muscular, and elegant, this is a wine for true connoisseurs seeking a champagne that pushes boundaries and leaves a lasting impression.

“The 2014 harvest year provided another opportunity for Côte aux Enfants to prove its potential on a cool profile, lighter year. The wine is made only from the heart of the northern-facing part of La Côte aux Enfants. In 2014 they decided to wait, and picked the plot mid-September, several days after having picked Vieilles Vignes Françaises. The rich nose oozes Pinot power with its stylishly charred, vanilla, almond, pastry and toffee tones. Silky is the main descriptor for the wine’s impressively vinous and smooth texture. Intensely fruity, there is still a refreshing feeling of lightness and freshness to this tense and compact wine. The tamed phenolics have a firming effect on the long-lasting aftertaste, where sweet pastry and honey tones carry on lingering. ”
