The Story

Nicolaus Stanitski, a Henschke ancestor, originally planted the Hill of Grace vineyard during the 1860s above the Barossa Valley. During the 1950s Cyril Henschke took his family concern back to wine and established the Hill of Grace label in 1956. The Shiraz vines – many now over 140 years old – are among the world's oldest genetic Shiraz plant material. It is remarkable that the vineyard remained intact considering the economic uncertainty an...

Vintage 2021

2021 Barossa Valley Vintage Report

Following two particularly dry seasons, many were hoping for Mother Nature to be much kinder, and mostly she was. Winter rainfall in 2020 recorded 148mm, the same as winter 2019, (22% below average). The majority of this rainfall was in the latter half of August, with the rain continuing into September and October. This was ideal timing to replenish soil profiles to field capacity moving into budburst in O...

Written Notes

The 2021 vintage in Eden Valley is widely considered exceptional—one of the finest of the past decade. A cool, well-timed winter replenished soils, followed by a mild spring and a long, temperate growing season. Crucially, no major heat spikes occurred, and the extended ripening window allowed old-vine Shiraz to reach perfect phenolic maturity at moderate sugar levels. Yields were healthy but concentrated, and acidity remained beautifully intact.

For Hill of Grace—sourced from vines up to 160+ years old—2021 delivered a wine of purity, aromatic intensity, and haunting finesse, more in the elegant, timeless style of vintages such as 2010 and 2012.

The Hill of Grace 2021 is a breathtaking expression of ancient-vine Shiraz—ethereal, layered, and astonishingly pure, carrying the unmistakable grace of this storied vineyard.

The nose blooms with lifted, perfumed aromas of wild blueberry, mulberry, and black cherry, interwoven with hints of rose petal, lavender, and native bush spices. Beneath the floral topnotes lies a deeper, earth-driven complexity: anise seed, black pepper, sandalwood, smoked charcuterie, and warm granite. The transparency of the vintage allows the vineyard’s ancient vine character to shine with absolute clarity.

On the palate, the wine is silky, poised, and exquisitely detailed. Its texture is weightless yet concentrated—a hallmark of great Hill of Grace years. Fine, powdery tannins frame a core of pure dark fruit—blackberry, damson, and spiced plum—lifted by vibrant natural acidity that keeps everything fresh and harmonious. As the wine unfolds, layers of cocoa nib, cured meats, fennel seed, and ironstone minerality build across the mid-palate. The finish is long, luminous, and whisper-soft, echoing florals, spice, and stone long after the last sip.

A magnificent Hill of Grace—profoundly elegant, deeply expressive, and utterly transportive. While immediately captivating, its full tapestry of nuance will reveal itself over the next 20–30+ years, cementing 2021 as a vintage of rare beauty and longevity.

Henschke Hill of Grace 2021 /Medium deep crimson. Expressive raspberry, blackberry, cassis, hint elderberry/violet/ sage aromas with mocha, marzipan notes. Elegant yet powerful, dense but buoyant palate with ample blackberry pastille, blackcurrant, raspberry fruits, fine supple/ grainy tannins, lovely mid palate volume/ richness and superbly balanced grilled almond, roasted chestnut notes. Finishes claret firm with a featherweight plume of bittersweet tannins. A beguiling and lasting landmark Hill of Grace vintage with wonderful definition, vinosity and torque."
