The Story

The name Robustus pays tribute to the first wine that Dirk Niepoort made in 1990 with the same name and which was never released. The inspiration behind Robustus is essentially based on traditional way of ageing the wines longer time in bigger old wood. The idea was to make a wine, which portrays well the Douro and its vineyards, of great structure, with the presence of tannins and acidity giving it vigour and nerve as well as many years of li...

Vintage 2019

2019 was a year to celebrate the Douro’s remarkably resilient grape varieties in an unusually dry year. Our ability to closely monitor their varying maturation cycles and adjust our picking schedule accordingly meant we were able to deliver the best expression of the different varieties.

Written Notes

Named in tribute to Dirk Niepoort’s unreleased maiden 1990 red, Niepoort Robustus revives the ancient Douro tradition of protracted élevage in neutral wood. Sourced from north-facing, 60- to 100+-year-old field-blend vines (Quinta do Carril and old Cima Corgo parcels), the wine undergoes long macerations (often exceeding 40 days) and spends roughly four to five years resting in large, seasoned 2,000-liter wooden foudres (tonéis) prior to bottling unfined and unfiltered. This patient upbringing yields a profound synthesis of weathered schist, balsamic depth, and immortal structural grip.

Remarkably refined and precise, the 2019 is arguably the most aristocratic modern release of Robustus, opening with scents of wild blackberry, damask rose, graphite, and tea tree before revealing savory undertones of presunto, wild mushrooms, and iodine. The palate achieves profound amplitude and savory umami depth with a meat-broth character, delivering fresh dark plum and tart black cherry bound by fine, silty chamois tannins and a saline mineral drive that wears its four years in large wood with effortless youth. Youthful; cellar until 2028–2045+.
