The Story

Batuta is not made every year. It is a wine of extremes; the tannins are present yet fine and elegant. North facing very old vineyards from Quinta do Carril are the main source for Batuta, but also older vines (about 100 years old) near Quinta de Nápoles are included. Batuta results from very delicate vinification system where the alcoholic maceration is led to the extreme and all details are took into account in order to obtain this very comp...

Vintage 2023

In Portugal, 2023 was characterised by weather challenges, but these did not lead to significant crop losses. Originally, a harvest increase of eight percent was expected, due to a mild summerthat favoured earlier ripening. However, weather instability and rain during the harvest led to lower yields than expected, with early harvesting preventing major losses in some regions.

In the Douro region, where previous years were characterised by h...

Written Notes

First created in 1999, Niepoort Batuta represents the pinnacle of structural precision and austerity in the Douro. Sourced from north-facing, 70- to 100+-year-old field-blend parcels at Quinta do Carril and near Quinta de Nápoles, it is the house’s most architecturally classical red. Following a stylistic evolution starting in 2018 toward 100% destemmed fruit and ultra-long gentle macerations (infusion-style, extending up to several months) followed by roughly 20 to 22 months in French oak barriques, Batuta achieves an aristocratic tension between immense phenolic structure, low alcohol (typically 12.5% ABV), and translucent finesse.

Deep garnet with bright violet edges, the 2023 displays an arresting aromatic intensity, opening with wild strawberries, black cherries, Indian ink, pencil graphite, and crushed mint over a backdrop of wet schist rock. On the palate, it delivers a masterclass in concentration without weight—juicy and razor-sharp on entry, it unfurls a tapestry of tart dark plums, pomegranate, and cracked peppercorn, bound by ultra-fine, tongue-enveloping tannins and an electric saline line that suggests a 25-year cellaring ceiling. Youthful; best held until 2028–2048+

In one sentence: Intense, spicy and densely textured

Intense aromas of spice, liquorice and violets lead into a dense, chewy palate. Full-bodied and concentrated, the wine displays dark fruit and a powerful, almost port-like impression of richness. Its robust structure and persistent finish give it an assertive personality, with considerable depth and weight. Optimum drinking window 2028-2040. – JL 92p (Oct 2026)

Food pairing: Charcoal-grilled ribeye, braised short ribs, or game stew with juniper and dark fruit. The concentrated flavours and firm tannins are well suited to rich, deeply savoury dishes.
