The Story

R.D. (Recently Disgorged) is the result of a great vision of Madame Bollinger, R.D. is a magnification of the very best that the Champagne region’s terroir has to offer. R.D. starts as a Grande Année, the prestige cuvée of Bollinger, and is allowed to mature for an extra 8 to 20 years, sometimes more. This special aging allows the wine to maintain a unique combination of freshness and vivacity, while developing delicate and complex aromas. The result is a unique style of its own that is highly acclaimed by Bollinger lovers and true wine connoisseurs. The disgorgement date - clearly stated on the back label - is informational. It does not mean that R.D. should be consumed soon afterwards. Much to the contrary, the R.D. wines are characterized by an impressive capacity to age, not only before, but also after the date of disgorgement.

Vintage 1982

One of the decade’s best vintages, which can be excellently enjoyed already now. The winter was cold and the spring cool. The cold weather moved the start of the growth season and enabled the vines to avoid spring frosts. The inflorescences, which bloomed in June, enjoyed perfect conditions. The warm and sunny weather continued through summer all the way until early September, when refreshing and needed rains arrived in the area. They saved the grapes from overmaturing. The result was an excellent vintage, which in addition to being high-quality was quantitatively one of the biggest harvests ever. The vintage was favorable especially for blanc de blancs. Stylistically, the wines are giving, heavy and rich in nuances. They are now at an excellent age, but can still endure maturing 5–7 years on the average.

Written Notes

R. D. (Recently Disgorged) is the same as the vintage wine, but stored a few more years in contact with the yeast. The '82 has a more vigorous fruit than the normally disgorged wine. In this vintage the rich autolytic character and muscular build come in very handy. Did not however believe that an 82 disgorged in 1993 would be so magical in 2007 that it turned out to be one of the three most eminent RD's that I have ever tasted. The entire nut-tobacco-smokiness had suddenly made its appearance along with tones of duck liver, honeysuckle, dark chocolate and sauna splashed by birch twigs. A fantastic champagne with which it is essential to catch the few moments when it displays itself in the window of beauty in all its glory. Just in 2007 the best Bollinger of them all! In 2013 a bit less explosive.
