The Story

Drinking Pétrus may be an unforgettable experience. We has been lucky to have the opportunity to taste most of its great vintages. That is why wine enthusiasts often come to us for advice. First, WeI advise you to choose a good vintage, an excellent one if your wallet allows. If you taste a poor vintage, you will notice how it raises above most other wines of the same vintage, but you will miss the actual point of Pétrus.

The 1928 Pétrus is among the very rare, early historic releases from one of Pomerol’s most legendary estates. It is celebrated for its richness, concentration and age-earned complexity, and remains noteworthy in vertical tastings alongside other great early Bordeaux releases. It is extremely scarce and highly prized among collectors.

Appearance: Mature garnet with brick-tinged edges and a brilliant core for its age, showing the characteristic evolution of a wine approaching a century of maturity.

Nose: Deeply complex and evocative, combining rich dark fruit reduction (black plum, cassis), dried fig, leather, forest floor and earthy truffle notes, layered with nuances of cedar spice, tobacco, and dark chocolate. As it opens, tertiary aromas of mushroom, balsamic herb and subtle floral lift add breadth and sophistication.

Palate: Medium-to-full bodied with a remarkably supple and velvety texture considering its age. Mature flavours of blackberry jam, dried plum, and sweet spice are framed by smooth, integrated acidity and soft, fine tannins. Secondary earthiness, tobacco leaf, espresso and hints of mineral salinity give structure and depth without heaviness.

Finish: Long, polished, and deeply satisfying, with lingering notes of dark fruit, spice, forest floor and cedar that taper gracefully, leaving a persistent impression of terroir and complexity.

Overall: An extraordinarily rare and fully mature expression of Pétrus, showcasing the extraordinary ageing potential of Pomerol Merlot. This 1928 vintage offers a layered, nuanced profile dominated by tertiary complexity and refined texture—best appreciated with gentle decanting and careful service.

Serving: 16–18 °C; gentle decant (30–60 min) to allow the mature aromatics to open.

Pairing: Roast lamb, game in rich sauces, braised short ribs, aged cheeses—dishes that complement its rich, earthy layers.

Drinking Window: Now–2035+

was even better. It had the garden, the earth, the plum and the chocolate. It was a quadrafecta of a nose, paying off big-time to anyone that had a glass. Robert Bohr noted ‘chocolate covered cherries,’ and its flavors also had that chocolate Tootsie Pop quality of the 1921, but this time in the mouth of Adriana Lima. Someone found it ‘exotic and Burgundian.’ The concentration of the 1928 was a notch up from the ’21, possessing a bit more intensity despite the similar overall style. Big Boy gave it 99 points, and I was very close in my opinion as well

Petrus 1928 / 100 points / Red and black fruit, eucalyptus, violets, all serenade the nostrils. As with the best 1928’s, they are as Paul Pontallier of Chateau Margaux had said, “indestructible.” Here was a shining example. Red fruit laced with undergrowth and black truffle on the palate opening. It has at moments the striking balance of mature Burgundy with the gregarious grace of Pomerol. The sweet fruit fans out across the palate. The concentration and intensity on the finish has you beaming with joy, and you are as enraptured as if you were drinking in Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring on your palate. 100 Points+ (the “+” is for alternate life form factor, and I have given it to a few wines that are simply transcendent, the 1900 Margaux and ’45 Mouton come to mind)
