Drinking Pétrus may be an unforgettable experience. We has been lucky to have the opportunity to taste most of its great vintages. That is why wine enthusiasts often come to us for advice. First, WeI advise you to choose a good vintage, an excellent one if your wallet allows. If you taste a poor vintage, you will notice how it raises above most other wines of the same vintage, but you will miss the actual point of Pétrus.

The 1949 Petrus ranks as one of the greatest Pomerol wines that I have ever tasted. Its appearance is indicative of its age, although there is less degradation compared to the 1947. The bouquet is breathtaking: a mélange of red and black fruit, that faint eucalyptus scent that is more common on 1945s. The details and precision is profound. The palate is perfectly balanced with filigree tannins. It never presses down hard on the accelerator, more squeezes it gently, a discreet crescendo as it builds with more red fruit laced with undergrowth and black truffle towards the perfectly pitched finish. In an odd way it is reminiscent of mature Burgundy insofar that it conveys beguiling, almost ineffable transparency. It is a wine that can bring grown men to tears. Tasted at a private dinner in Belgium.
This was a bottling from an unknown négociant. Very sweet but unfortunately also quite oxidised. One could only imagine what a seductive wine it must have been.
