Drinking Pétrus may be an unforgettable experience. We has been lucky to have the opportunity to taste most of its great vintages. That is why wine enthusiasts often come to us for advice. First, WeI advise you to choose a good vintage, an excellent one if your wallet allows. If you taste a poor vintage, you will notice how it raises above most other wines of the same vintage, but you will miss the actual point of Pétrus.

Little known 50 years ago, this château has seen the rise of a myth about the uniqueness of its wine. The wine’s inimatibility is due to many factors, first of all, an exceptional terroir - 40 meters above sea level, the highest point of the appellation - with a layer of heavy clay soil and an iron subsoil. These are ideal conditions for the expression of the Merlot grape. With such a special terroir, the approach in the vineyard and cellar is...

Moderately intense ruby colour. Delicate and somehow almost shy nose with fragrant floral aromas and hints of plums. The less expressive nose is followed by surprisingly big palate. Medium-bodied wine has refined tannins, intense dark fruits and broad texture with glycerol sensation. Very long and elegant finish which is wrapped up in elegantly mouth-drying tannins. This ought to be enjoyed soon although will most obviously keep well another 5-7 years still.
The 1978 Petrus is a wine that I have encountered two or three times (the first occasion at an MW seminar where I absconded with the dregs that accompanied by ham sandwich.) For many years it was actually comparatively a good value. It has a pretty, if conservative, rather straight-laced bouquet of red fruit with marked sous-bois and leather aromas suggesting that this is approaching the end of its drinking plateau. Like many 1978s it comes across as foursquare and masculine on the palate, just a touch of bell pepper towards the second half, a rather “bony” Petrus as whatever fruit there was initially recedes and leaves the tannins. Bottles should be consumed in the near future as it is not in gradual decline. Taken from the “Pomerol” book.
