“It is hard to call Petrus a “sleeper of the vintage,” but the 2008 will merit more attention than most consumers would think. Low yields of 30 hectoliters per hectare resulted in only 25,000 bottles of this beauty. A wine of great intensity (possibly the most concentrated wine of the vintage), this 100% Merlot boasts a dark purple color as well as a sweet perfume of mocha, caramel, black cherries, black currants, earth and forest floor. The Story

Drinking Pétrus may be an unforgettable experience. We has been lucky to have the opportunity to taste most of its great vintages. That is why wine enthusiasts often come to us for advice. First, WeI advise you to choose a good vintage, an excellent one if your wallet allows. If you taste a poor vintage, you will notice how it raises above most other wines of the same vintage, but you will miss the actual point of Pétrus.

Written Notes

The 2008 Petrus is a strikingly elegant wine, showcasing the finesse and complexity of this renowned Pomerol estate. It presents a deep, opaque ruby color with a vibrant rim.

The nose is expressive and inviting, revealing aromas of ripe blackberries, cassis, and plums, intertwined with subtle notes of violets, tobacco, and a touch of graphite.

On the palate, it is full-bodied and impeccably balanced, with velvety tannins and a rich, plush texture. Flavors of dark fruit are layered with hints of mocha, cedar, and a whisper of spice. The wine’s precise acidity and mineral backbone provide a refreshing lift, leading to a long, elegant finish.

The 2008 Petrus is a classic expression of the estate’s style, offering both immediate pleasure and the potential for further development.

There's so much floral and berry character on the nose and palate here. It's full-bodied and very dense with lots of fine and delicate tannins. Winemaker Ol iver Berrouet calls it a classic Bordeaux in style and I have to agree with him because of the fine tannins, fresh acidity, and beautiful reserve fruit. Lovely sweet berry and chocolate finish to the wine. Try in in five to six years.

This vintage has an attractive perfume of violets, sweet ripe plums and spice like cinnamon and nutmeg. The wine first enters quite gently, but the flavors start to unfold on the mid palate along with firm, ripe tannins. There is immense vivacity and focus here with the intense flavors and dense tannins providing an interplay of power and finesse. The wine rises like a crescendo and leaves a sweet note in its long finish. Youthful and densely layered, this wine is still in its nascent stage and will offer so much more in 6 to 8 years time.

This wine didn't make the headlines at all in April 2008. Rather subdued and oaky. I guess adding press wine will do Petrus 2007 a really great favor. I didn't have a chance to retaste this wine yet - maybe retasting would give much better TNs.

Ruby. Somewhat deep but equally pure, blueberries and floral. Extremelly layered nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, almost creamy texture, yet nuanced. Again somewhat light body with intense flavours that easilly escapes you. Superb length.

The 2008 is destined to be one of the greatest Petrus’s ever made, ranking alongside the 1989, 1990, 1998, and 2000, and even eclipsing the 2005. An inky/red/purple color accompanies an unevolved, but promising nose of sweet red and black fruits intermixed with hints of earth, spice box, and caramel. It possesses a formidable personality of great intensity, awesome texture, amazingly well-integrated sweet tannin, and a freshness and precision that are hallmarks of this vintage. Given the tiny production, there will not be much of this sensational wine. Like most recent Petrus vintages, a decade of patience will be required despite the sweetness of the tannin. It should evolve for at least 50 years.

Like the other top Moueix Pomerol properties, especially such top terroirs as Trotanoy, La Fleur Petrus, Hosanna, and La Providence, yields at Petrus were 28 hectoliters per hectare. This vineyard was harvested much like the proprietors of Yquem pick grapes, waiting for perfect maturity and selecting grape bunches as opposed to sending a team in and harvesting until the entire vineyard is picked. Petrus was harvested on six different days, September 29, October 1, 4, 7, 10, and 12.
