The Story

La Grande Année is the very embodiment of an exceptional, timeless champagne. Artisanal savoir-faire is at the heart of its production. One such artisanal technique is vinification, which takes place in oak barrels that are around 20 years old. This helps the wine develop complex aromas, and, thanks to micro-oxygenation, lends an extraordinary ageing potential. These 4,000 barrels are housed and maintained in the Champagne Bollinger Cooperage....

Wine Information

In 1976, Bollinger Vintage became Grande Année; then, in 2004, "La" Grande Année… A name simple enough to illustrate its exceptional status: because only truly extraordinary years become vintage at Bollinger. La Grande Année made its screen débuts two years later, in James Bond’s Casino Royale.

Vintage 2000

A warm and wet winter was followed by an equally wet spring. First, in May, came the seri- ous heat, which gave a fast owering around June 14. Chlorosis and mold growth were evi- dent. June and August were hot and dry. But if you were like me, and tried to have a July vaca- tion in Champagne that year, you noticed how cold and rainy it was. The weather was almost as bad as at home, with constant rain and local hailstorms.

Written Notes

Has spent an impressive 8 years on lees. This bottle was disgorged in April '09. 100% barrel fermented. Approx blend is 65% pinot and 35% chardonnay. A coiled, tight style, which is youthful but attractive now. Certainly has a good future for those who prefer a more mature style. Notes of limes and lemons. Wet slate. Hints of glacéd lemon. Very finely balanced. Citrussy/apply acidity. (Bolly see the '99 as “more feminine” than this wine – for me, 2000 is the preferred vintage). Lots of underlying power here and a lovely, slightly slippery texture. Next vintage will be the 2002, which should be spectacular. 94
