Parker 100 point:

Talk about a thrill a second, as well as unprecedented decadence (at least for me), consider the rarity of a flight of six double magnums of Petrus! Because there were not many people at the tasting, there was the possibility of having several large glasses of these wines, making judging them all the more fun. And let's not forget the medical benefit of flushing the fat out of one's arteries with such remarkable juice! The...

The Story

Drinking Pétrus may be an unforgettable experience. We has been lucky to have the opportunity to taste most of its great vintages. That is why wine enthusiasts often come to us for advice. First, WeI advise you to choose a good vintage, an excellent one if your wallet allows. If you taste a poor vintage, you will notice how it raises above most other wines of the same vintage, but you will miss the actual point of Pétrus.

Written Notes

There was a magnum of 1970 Petrus, but I was starting to run out of gas.  Classic, rich and decadent were all I had left (96M).

Pétrus 1970 / Miserable looking bottle, but the level was into the neck. Mature, healthy looking colour. Very fragrant and intense nose that has hints of blackberries and vanilla oak. Extremely smooth and silky, but at the same time fantastically massive and thick, almost too good to be true. A generous wine that is very complex and harmonious. Ready of course, yet enough depth to last. A stunningly mature wine that thrilled the mind as much as the palate.

Pure and rich. Long. Pure and sweet. Complex and racy. Really lively and complete. A wonderful bottle of the 1970.

Pétrus 1970 / Deep brick red colour. Elegant, complex yet pronounced nose with bell pepper, tobacco leaf and beef stock. The big volume of mouth-drying tannin raises questions if it will ever soften. Full and alive, fruity with a charming combination of elegance and power. Drink within the next 15 years.95 points

Pétrus 1970 was for me a mayor disappointment. I have to admit it didn’t start well anyway, with two bad bottles, one oxidised, one corked. Actually, the third one had a lousy cork as well, but at least the wine was clean. But still, to me it seemed a bit dull, very sweet, sort of obese against the sheer finesse of the Palmer. In it’s defense I must say that because of the faulty bottles we had, the good one didn’t get much time to breathe, so maybe I am too harsh in my judgment.

Inside Information

In 2014, the huge, spicy nose is as great as ever. Incredible to remember that this had only a 12-day maceration, short for Petrus. Rich and opulently-textured on the palate. Defies its age. Meaty, sweet and gummy. One half of that legendary pair of Petrus, 1970 and 1971. I wish we met more often. Serena Sutcliffe, MW WA 99
