Wine Enthusiast - Roger Voss - June 01, 2014

97 Points "This extravagantly perfumed wine has great juicy, ripe fruits. The tannic structure is almost secondary in the welter of ripe fruits, but it is enough to promise aging. Acidity and rich fruitiness partner each other to give a wine that is both fresh and powerful. Drink from 2020."

The Story

Drinking Pétrus may be an unforgettable experience. We has been lucky to have the opportunity to taste most of its great vintages. That is why wine enthusiasts often come to us for advice. First, WeI advise you to choose a good vintage, an excellent one if your wallet allows. If you taste a poor vintage, you will notice how it raises above most other wines of the same vintage, but you will miss the actual point of Pétrus.

2011 Petrus Interview with Olivier Berrouet

Tb “How did you deal with the tannin levels with 2011 Petrus?”

Olivier Berrouet “You’re right. We have higher tannin levels in 2011 Petrus than we did in 2010 or 2009. But due to our soft extraction, the tannins are not aggressive and the wine feels soft.”

Tb “When do you decide it’s time to harvest in Pomerol?”

Olivier Berrouet “Harvesting is always based on the taste of berries. We focu...

Written Notes

The 2011 Petrus presents a deep ruby color with a slight brick edge, indicating its maturity. The nose is elegant, offering aromas of red berries, blackcurrants, and a hint of plum, complemented by subtle notes of cedar and earthy undertones.

On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with well-integrated tannins and a smooth texture. Flavors of red fruit and black cherry are accompanied by nuances of tobacco, graphite, and a touch of spice. The acidity is balanced, providing a nice freshness and structure.

The finish is medium-long, showcasing a pleasant blend of fruit and earthy notes. The 2011 Petrus is a well-rounded wine, offering a refined and enjoyable drinking experience with moderate aging potential.

Fruity, with aromas of liquorice, mocha and truffles on the nose. Flavours of cherry, cassis and a touch of minerality on the palate. A classical long finish.

  • 95p

This wine had fresh acidity, fine berry fruit, discrete oak and excellent balance. Lighter than usual but with excellent richness and finesse.

  • 95p
Dark, ruby red colour. Closed nose reveals some spicy, floral and dark fruit aromas. Medium-bodied, explosive mouthfeel shows vivid minerality, gentle tannins, and energetic, crisp black fruit. Very concentrated and focused taste. Long, delicate and harmonious finish. Powerful wine with refined toastiness and charming freshness. Ideal match with Pigeon stuffed with truffle risotto.
  • 92p
From 100% Merlot, the wine reached 13.5% alcohol. Floral, boysenberry, peppermint, truffle, cocoa, coffee, spice and kirsch. Soft, pure red cherry with refined tannins and a plush, silky, long finish. Lacking the depth and concentration found in 2009 or 2010, there is ample acidity, structure, freshness, balance, length and a strong sense of purity. 95-96 Pts

Good looking normal size bottle, is in a perfect condition and has by the neck level. Colour is ruby red, and looking bright and deep. On the nose it is intense, refined, opulent and tempting. The taste is fresh, perfumed, medium-bodied, with balanced and complex structure. On the palate it is layered and has perfumed, coffee, spice, blackberry, floral, raspberry and tobacco flavours. The finish is long, lingering and pure. This wine is sophisticated and fine. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 20-30 years and decant at least 2h before tasting.

Inside Information

A dense ruby/purple-tinged color and restrained but intriguing aromas of kirsch, raspberry jam, wood spice, and mulberries are found in this full-bodied Petrus. An undeniable success in 2011, it is rich, layered and pure with light to moderate tannin, but seems slightly less muscular and tannic compared to its stablemate, Trotanoy. Forget it for a few years and drink it over the following 25 years. Made from 100% Merlot, it tips the scales at 13.5% alcohol. In short, it is typically open-knit and already showing very well. This is quite opulent.
