The Story

Redoma Reserva is made with grapes from ancient 80 years old vines, planted at an altitude of 600 metres in mica schist soils. Since its creation in 1995, the main aim of producing this wine has been to express the character of the Douro old vineyards. At the end of the ageing period, the best barrels are selected, considering their minerality, complexity and ageing potential and not necessarily those with the most expressive aromas.

Vintage 2018

After an extended drought, rain finally came to the Douro in spring 2018 in such quantities that there was some damaging erosion. Following that, summer was hot, and yields were consequently low, but the classic varieties thrived in the heat, producing deep, intense, fragrant wines.

Written Notes

The Redoma Reserva Branco 2018 fermented spontaneously in French oak barrels where it also underwent partial malolactic fermentation and a 9-month-long maturation period. Having fermented and aged in barrels on its fine lees, this Redoma Reserva boasts flawless structure, which in combination with its acidity, makes for a beautifully elegant and multifaceted wine. Distinct floral aromas harmonise beautifully with the oak, leading to a vibrant and electric palate and lastly, a lingering and subtly saline finish.

2018 was a relatively cool year up until August, with the coolest July recorded in the 21st century. The vines seemed to be developing relatively late, with a delay of about 3 weeks compared to 2017. The first days of August brought a sudden spike in temperatures: the 4th of August was the hottest year to date this century. As a result, the berries ripened slowly during the month of September. The water stress caused the vines to produce musts with low alcohols and good phenolic ripeness, as well as good complexity and minerality. The white wine grapes were picked between 5 September and 2 October.
