The Story

Drinking Pétrus may be an unforgettable experience. We has been lucky to have the opportunity to taste most of its great vintages. That is why wine enthusiasts often come to us for advice. First, WeI advise you to choose a good vintage, an excellent one if your wallet allows. If you taste a poor vintage, you will notice how it raises above most other wines of the same vintage, but you will miss the actual point of Pétrus.

Written Notes

We marched on to the next flight, which led with the 1999 Petrus. It was as if I was in familiar territory again, back amongst adults after those adolescents from the first decade of the 21st century. Yeast and earth were the first things that stood out of the ‘99’s nose, along with t ‘n a and muscular, big and brawny fruit. Black and purple dominated the scenery, although coconut kissed its way in the front door. There was nice game to this zippy, bodybuilder of a Petrus, although The Mogul found it closed

The 1999 Petrus "is serviceable but shrinks like a violet" – the words taken from my Pomerol tome. Of three or four bottles tasted it has a decent wild strawberry and balsamic-tinged bouquet whilst the palate initially conveys some sensuality, quite elegant and fans out nicely. I admire many Pomerol wines in this off-vintage, although in this year I believe that Lafleur made a better wine. Taken from the "Pomerol" book.

This wine is turning out much in the style of such wonderful Petrus vintages as 1967 and 1971. Although not as outstanding as either the 1998 or 2000, it displays beautiful intensity and finesse in a more evolved style than one normally expects from this estate. The wine has a dense, nearly opaque ruby/purple color, sweet black cherry, mulberry, truffle-infused fruit, full body, low acidity, admirable purity, and sweet tannin. It should be ready to drink in 5-6 years, and will last for two decades. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2030. Only 2,400 cases were produced.

This wine is almost an exact copy of 1995, but significantly lighter and not so sophisticated. Here we have for a change a feminine version of Pétrus. It tastes really splendid already now and will continue with that in the next 10-15 years.
