Robert Parker's Wine Advocate / Opaque purple-black colored, the 2016 Petrus slips effortlessly out of the glass with sanguine, seductive notes of kirsch, warm black plums, blueberry compote, red roses, Ceylon tea, violets, dark chocolate-covered cherries, licorice and cinnamon stick with wafts of iron ore, pencil lead, unsmoked cigars and crushed rocks. Full-bodied, profound and absolutely edifying on the palate, the densely packed, beautiful...

The Story

Drinking Pétrus may be an unforgettable experience. We has been lucky to have the opportunity to taste most of its great vintages. That is why wine enthusiasts often come to us for advice. First, WeI advise you to choose a good vintage, an excellent one if your wallet allows. If you taste a poor vintage, you will notice how it raises above most other wines of the same vintage, but you will miss the actual point of Pétrus.

2016 Bordeaux in Review / “A Once in a Lifetime Vintage”

By Andrew Caillard MW

The 2016 Bordeaux vintage will be remembered as one of the great years of the 21st Century. I have not been so excited about the prospects of such young wines since the remarkable back-to-back 2009 and 2010 vintages. At that time China was at the zenith of its extraordinary fine wine ascendency where the very top estates, particularly Chateau Lafite, had becom...

Pure nose, floral, very ripe and inky fruit with blackberry, cassis, earth, tobacco, very fine oak with just a touch of coffee and vanilla. Very dense palate, silky with immense concentration of tannin, very smooth and fine with layers of floral blackberry with plum, cassis, dark chocolate, fine spices, clove, pepper and a very long, intense and elegant finish, keeps lingering for minutes and new layers emerge.

The 2016 Pétrus is magnificent. There is a sense of total completeness in the 2016 that is hard to capture with words. A regal wine of total presence, the 2016 simply has it all. Beautifully layered in the glass, with stunning aromatics and endless, layered fruit, the 2016 is utterly captivating. Once again I am struck by the wine's purity and total class. Technical Director Olivier Berrout and his team turned out a magnificent Pétrus in 2016. Total time in barrel was 19 months, with 50% new oak.

One of the top wines in the vintage is unquestionably the 2016 Petrus, which is, as always, all Merlot aged in just over half new French oak. It's more reserved and subtle compared to the 2015, yet it’s unquestionably in the same ballpark, offering a deep ruby/purple color as well as a classy bouquet of crème de cassis, black cherries, graphite, smoke tobacco, spring flowers, and subtle spicy oak. This is a wine that builds with time in the glass and delivers a full-bodied, multi-dimensional texture, present, ripe tannins, perfect balance, and a finish that won't quit. It’s haute couture at its finest, and as I wrote multiple times in my notes, simply pure class. Hide bottles for at least 7-8 years (10-15 would be even better) and it will keep for half a century.

This is very fleshy and deep with so much texture and richness. It’s full-bodied yet fresh. The tobacco, white truffle, licorice and dark fruit are so impressive. It’s so exuberant and wild. It just goes on for ever. Spellbinding. Very muscular and powerful. Agile and energetic. Please give this time. Needs eight to ten years. Try from 2029.

Petrus - Deep ruby in color, here you find truffle, dark chocolate, coffee bean, cigar box, black cherry and dark plums. Full bodied, elegant, velvety, opulent, sweet and fresh, the presence on the palate is silk and velvet in the texture with purity and sweetness to the fruits. The wine is hedonistic as well as intellectual, and a little bit firm. There is serious aging potential. The wine really sticks with you, for over 60 seconds in the finish. Give this at least 15 or more years in the cellar to develop before popping a cork.

Very very deep crimson. Gorgeous nose. Very intense and rich. Richer than Le Pin and I did not spit. Beautiful balance. More rigour than some vintages. Very long indeed. Unusually structured but no shortage of beguiling flavours. Violets and tar.

Dark colour. Intense dark berry, cherry, graphite aromas with blueberry inky tobacco notes. Supple and glossy deep set blackberry inky fruit, touch juicy, with hint of smoke, musky notes. Fine chalky graphite textures, lovely pure fruit notes and exceptional mineral length. Really super wine with freshness silkiness and viscosity. Tasted at Ch Petrus. 98 points

A wine with great magic. Dark purple red with violet hue and black core. Very elegant fruit, fine and fragrant, blackberries, hints of raspberries, delicate hints of violets an white blossoms, hints of vanilla, cinnamon and white pepper in the background. Very ripe and quite massive tannins but silky style, excellent depth and length, freshness and incredible finish. An impressing wine, all in laces. 99

Ruby. Blackberries, fruity, floral, detailed, elegant, seductive as few, violets, blueberries, some vanilla, layered and deep nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity, dark berries, spices, detailed, blackberries, anise, layered, nuanced, playful, concentrated, quite lively, stunning length. Goes on and on. 99-100
