The Story

Drinking Pétrus may be an unforgettable experience. We has been lucky to have the opportunity to taste most of its great vintages. That is why wine enthusiasts often come to us for advice. First, WeI advise you to choose a good vintage, an excellent one if your wallet allows. If you taste a poor vintage, you will notice how it raises above most other wines of the same vintage, but you will miss the actual point of Pétrus.

“Bright nose with lots of expressive aromas - plum, green olives, mocha, minerals, chalk, stone, sweet cherry and a little green bean in there gets honeyed as it stays in the glass a sweet pungency without being too pungent still a little youthful on the palate flashy yet not quite fleshy lots of alcohol on the finish but not in the belly good plum and slate flavors on finish a bit tight on the palate but still all good wintry smooths out and opens up nicely.”(94pts JK)

Wild aromas of crushed fruit, forest flower and wild mushrooms. Full-bodied, with incredibly velvety tannins that go on and on. Lovely and exciting fruit. Gorgeous, seductive wine. Hard to resist now. Better than I remember.--'95/'96 Bordeaux retrospective. Best after 2007.

The 1996 Petrus has never been an endearing wine and this, the third or fourth bottle that I have tasted, does nothing to change my indifference. It has a slightly herbaceous bouquet that feels enervated when compared to the flamboyant 1998. It just misses the fruit concentration and vivacity you expect from a Petrus, a jalopy stuck in first gear. The palate is medium-bodied, leafy and gentle, with slightly brusque tannin. Sure, there is decent weight on the finish but it flirts with an adjective rarely attributed to this Pomerol. It is just ordinary and Petrus does not do “ordinary”. Tasted at the Petrus dinner at the Épure restaurant in Hong Kong.

A level fill, deep ruby with garnet rim. Violets, dark fruits, some vanilla. Very good mouthfeel and texture, fresh acidity, ripe tannins, good length. Lacks quite much in complexity, refinement and nuances for me for a wine of this legendary status. 91
