Vintage Report

Upon closer examination of the decade, attention must also be drawn to the Bordeaux 1950 vintage, which offered quantity more than quality - indeed, with welcome exceptions. Due to the relatively rainy summer, expectations for the year were not very high, but the change in weather by the end of the year made it a good one, and in some areas even excellent. The wines lacked the ample and balanced character of the previous year. They were instead noted for their highly tannic quality. But the wines have matured with surprising grace. Many of the wines have become more harmonious as the tannins have faded.

Two vintage gems are the Cheval Blanc and Pétrus. On the other hand, the Graves La-Mission-Haut-Brion is an outstanding wine. Although the finest wines are at the peak of their drinkability right now, they will remain there for years to come. Due to the large crop and the very modest reputation of the vintage, these wines can be found at very affordable prices.

Vintage Report

St-Emilion by Château Cheval Blanc: 1950 is a superb vintage, combining quantity and quality. It has been somewhat overlooked because of the reputation of the three previous years: 1947-1948-1949. The wine is very complete and rich.

WEATHER AND WATER BALANCE

The fine weather in 1950 was conducive to good vegetative growth, especially during bud burst. There was also sufficient water stress to produce good fruit. That is because grapes need to gradually experience a water deficit to achieve optimum concentration.

FEATURES OF THE VINTAGE

The fine weather this year was ideal for the vine growth. Flowering took place under perfect conditions and yields amounted to 56.4 hectolitres per hectare. The harvest began on the 18th of September and finished on the 6th of October.

Fermentation was kept under control, even if by somewhat archaic methods – there was not even an electric pump at the time. After this harvest, former owners Jacques and Joseph Fourcaud-Laussac built a 3rd cellar with rubble stone.  The lack of space (necessitating the constant moving around of barrels) forced cellarmaster Gaston Vaissière to be very imaginative....
The wine had 13° alcohol.

1950 was the start of the fast changes that would be seen in the next 2 decades , the great depression was becoming a faint memory and families were moving out to the suburbs, kids watched howdy doody on 12 inch black and white TV sets and spent Saturday afternoons watching cartoons at Cinema matinees , times were gentler with little violence and the consumer revolution was about to start in a big way, and the man of the household became the sole breadwinner. The median family income was $3,300 a year and milk was still delivered to the doorstep.
