Vintage Report

Bordeaux / If 1981 was forgotten after 1982, the 1983 was completely overshadowed by 1982, although the harvest was large and of high quality everywhere in Bordeaux. Too much humidity brought about by heavy rains impeded production in many places. In Margaux, some of the wines were even better than in 1982. For example, Château Margaux announced that their 1983 surpassed the 1982. One of the best-ever Palmers was Palmer 1983.

The best wine of the vintage was however Le Pin – no doubt. It is a real bargain, not only for quality, but also for price at 950 euro a bottle, compared with Le Pin 1982 at 4,500 euro in 2015. Cheval Blanc also succeeded fabulously. Yquem started a new ascent this year. Graves got hit by hail storm yielding a small crop and basically non-existent anymore.

Vintage Report

Champagne: The 1983 vintage was one of the decade’s most mature vintages and is at its best today.

This vintage was not born without pain, either. If the 1982 winter was cold and the spring cool, then this year it was many more times so. The damp and flowering. When it finally took place, the weather conditions were excellent. The summer was warm and sunny. As in the previous year, fall rains saved the grapes from drying up. Along with the rains of early September, temperatures fell and the maturing slowed down. The weather improved toward the end of September, and the harvest was reaped in early October. The vintage grew to be even bigger than the 1982 one. The wines have matured noticeably faster than the 1982 vintage. Stylistically, the wines are robust, lush and at a really enjoyable age right now.

Vintage Report by Angelo Gaja: Another difficult vintage. It was important to choose the right date. There was a rain of four days. Some producers harvested too early. Those who waited after the rain had greater quantity. The quality became better but not great. It was possible for there to be a lot of difference in quality.

Italy Vintage Report by Tb: The year, 1983, was an unstable one. In Piedmont although rains ruined the blooming phase, a dry end season saved the crop. The top producers succeeded in making a small quantity of excellent wines. In Tuscany the entire spring was mild and dry, thus guaranteeing a fairly early ripening of grapes. 1983 was especially favourable to the Chianti region, whilst in Montalcino the poor weather during the harvest lowered expectations. The wines are now at their prime drinkability, even if the best modern Chiantis could still do with more cellaring, along with the Barolos and Barbarescos.
