This could well be the year that marked the start of the digital age when the Microprocessor was invented. We also saw the use of more and more of the transistor technology in use in things like hand held calculators which although are still very expensive over time will drop in price and increase in function to where we are today. It is also the first year North Sea Oil production begins in Norway. One other major change is the change to Decimalisation in the UK on and Ireland onFebruary 15th . Vintage Report

Rhöne Vintage Report by JabouletIn the northernmost part, the grape harvests began on the 26th. September and finished on the 8th. October. In December 1970, a metre of snow fell in the Rhône valley (in three flurries), which is exceptional. The motorway is blocked. In all, the winter is long and hard. The Spring is not very good either; flowering is late and there is some crop failure. The warm days arrive only in July, then the summer is warm and dry. The weather is good for the harvest.

The 1971 vintage gave an average quantity crop of well balanced, good, pleasant wines. In HERMITAGE, the reds are very good. It’s not a much talked-about, or written-about vintage, which is a shame as it merits TWO STARS. The total harvest of the Côtes du Rhône wines is 1,348,190 Hl.

Vintage Report

Champagne Vintage Report by Salon:  There was rapid emergence of vegetation, although spring frosts (between 27th and 29th April) affected 1000 hectares. The hailstorm of 27th May alone destroyed 650 hectares. Cold weather took hold in June, with flowering in very bad weather conditions, extending from June through to early July. Exceptional weather in July, but hail and windy weather from 27th July to 18th August completely annihilated 2650 hectares. Major erosion problems. Harvesting commenced on 18th September. Good quality.
