Vintage Report

Bordeaux Vintage Report / 1978 has turned out to be a very good wine vintage especially in Pauillac and St Julien. Weather conditions were challenging with a very late spring followed by a torrid and erratic summer. The vintage was saved by perfect early autumn weather and as a consequence some very good to excellent wines were produced.

It would be wise to select the better Châteaux in this vintage purely because some of the lesser estates are over the hill. The best will continue to drink until 2010-2012. Lafite Rothschild is the wine of the vintage.

Vintage Report

Rhöne Vintage Report by Jaboulet: The total harvest of the Côtes du Rhône wines is 1,858,004 Hl. In the northernmost part, the grape harvests began on the 5th. October and finished on the 23rd. October. The Autumn turns cold after several fine days. The winter is cold and snowy. Spring is cold and very wet; growth is slowed down. Helicopter spraying is tried out on the HERMITAGE for the first time, with good results. Flowering begins only on the 15th. June. July, August and September are very good months.

There is good weather for the harvest, and very healthy grapes which give very good wines and, in some cases such as in the north (HERMITAGE, COTE ROTIE) some exceptional red wines, still closed(?), which will keep well. The whites are rare, rounded, and heady.

Vintage Report by Angelo Gaja:  Finally, 1978 was a celebrated vintage, a great vintage. Indeed, it was a special vintage. The grapes ripened very slowly. It was a very closed vintage and difficult to understand. It only began to discover its quality after fifteen or twenty years. It took time. This was a type of miracle that Nebbiolo can sometimes do. Vintages considered medium quality can show a better wine than we are expecting. Some vintages are like this.
