    BWW2025 COMPETITION

BWW 2025 – Where Only the World’s Greatest Wines Compete

Nearly three million votes were cast for 19,321 fine wines by an extraordinary community of 449,000 wine professionals and passionate wine lovers from around the world.

The BWW – Best Wine of the World Competition stands as the largest and most influential wine competition on the planet — measured not only by the number of wines entered, but by the unparalleled scale of its global audience and the depth of expertise behind every vote. Beyond ranking the world’s finest wines, BWW also honors the best wine shops and the most respected wine critics, creating a truly comprehensive snapshot of global wine excellence.

Since its founding in 2018, the BWW competition has attracted more than 17 million votes, making it the most participatory and democratic fine wine evaluation ever created.

Yet BWW is also, by design, the most demanding wine competition in the world. Unlike traditional judging panels or industry tastings, fewer than 0.1% of all wines involved ultimately receive an award. Excellence alone is not enough — only wines that inspire, endure, and resonate on a global scale succeed.

Simply reaching the finals is tougher than winning gold elsewhere — and already a distinction of the highest order.

Following the public voting phase, only the 10 to 100 most-voted wines in each of the five principal categories advanced to the Finals, held in August and September 2025:

    • Red Wine

    • White Wine

    • Sweet Wine

    • Fortified Wine

    • Champagne

In the Final round, a distinguished jury drawn from tastingbook.com’s global network of over 16,000 professionals — including leading wine writers, critics, bloggers, Masters of Wine, and winemakers — evaluated the finalists through two blind tastings, ensuring absolute objectivity and rigor.

In each category, only three distinctions are awarded:

    • Best Wine of the World

    • Platinum Medal (98–100 points)

    • Gold Medal (96–97 points)

No silver medals. No participation awards. Only the very pinnacle of global wine excellence is recognized.

At BWW, the world’s greatest wines compete exclusively against one another — making the Best Wine of the World Competition truly one of a kind.

Tastingbook congratulates all the winners and wishes them continued success in the 2025 vintage and beyond.

    BEST WINE OF THE WORLD

    BWW 2025 Honors Pétrus 2020 — World’s Best Wine

The Best Wine of the World (BWW) 2025 Competition proudly congratulates Château Pétrus on the extraordinary achievement of being named World’s Best Wine 2025 for the Pétrus 2020 vintage.

The 2020 vintage stands as a defining moment in the modern history of Pétrus — a wine born from a year of contrasts, precision, and exceptional natural balance. Despite the challenges of the growing season, the vineyard’s unique blue clay terroir expressed itself with rare clarity, producing fruit of remarkable concentration, purity, and finesse.

Pétrus 2020 captivates with its seamless harmony: profound depth wrapped in effortless elegance. The wine combines silken texture, vibrant energy, and extraordinary aromatic complexity, revealing layers of dark fruit, floral nuance, mineral tension, and noble restraint. Power and grace coexist in perfect proportion — a hallmark of truly timeless greatness.

What elevates Pétrus 2020 beyond excellence is not only its technical perfection, but its emotional resonance. It is a wine that speaks quietly yet with authority — a wine that does not seek attention, but commands it. In blind tasting, its identity emerged unmistakably: confident, composed, and profoundly complete.

By selecting Pétrus 2020 as the World’s Best Wine of 2025, the BWW jury recognizes a vintage that will be remembered for generations — a wine that transcends fashion, scores, and time, reaffirming Pétrus’ singular place at the pinnacle of the wine world.

Congratulations to Château Pétrus on this historic achievement

BEST WHITE WINE OF THE WORLD

BWW 2025 – White Wines at the Absolute Summit

At the BWW 2025 – Best Wine of the World Competition, more than 5,000 white wines from around the globe entered the competition. From this remarkable and highly competitive field, only 16 wines were ultimately awarded — making each distinction truly rare, singular, and extraordinary.

One of the most historic moments of the competition came from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, which participated in BWW for the very first time with its Montrachet 2019. The result was nothing short of spectacular: victory at the very first attempt. A moment of quiet inevitability, perhaps — yet still one that underscored the timeless authority of this legendary estate.

Arguably the greatest surprise of the entire white wine category came from Dana Estates in Napa Valley. Its Hershey Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc captivated the jury — many of whom were tasting the wine for the first time. The verdict was unanimous in spirit: the finest Napa Valley white wine the jury had ever encountered. A landmark moment not only for the estate, but for Napa Valley white wines as a whole.

Burgundy’s greatest whites once again performed at an exceptional level. Another first-time participant, Domaine Comtes des Lafon, delivered a truly unforgettable performance with its Montrachet 2020, reaffirming the estate’s status among the world’s elite producers of white wine.

Australia also made a powerful statement. Penfolds Yattarna 2022 proved to be an exceptionally positive surprise — though its excellence was less unexpected, as Yattarna has already established a strong record of success in previous BWW competitions.

A third first-time entrant to capture the jury’s attention was Screaming Eagle, presenting its Sauvignon Blanc 2019. The wine dazzled the panel in every respect except one — its price. That said, even Screaming Eagle’s elevated positioning remains distant when compared to the extraordinary heights commanded by the winning DRC Montrachet.

At BWW 2025, the white wine category delivered moments of history, revelation, and reaffirmation. With thousands of exceptional wines competing for just a handful of honors, every award stands as a testament to true global excellence— earned in the toughest white wine competition in the world.

    BEST CHAMPAGNES OF THE WORLD

BWW 2025 – Champagne at Its Highest Expression

At the BWW 2025 – Best Wine of the World Competition, more than 2,000 Champagnes from across the region were entered — yet only 14 wines were ultimately awarded, underlining just how rare and demanding recognition in this category truly is.

Champagne holds a particularly special place in the heart of the BWW founders. After all, they once established the world’s only dedicated Champagne Magazine and have curated the prestigious Top 100 Champagnes list annually for over 20 years. As a result, the Champagne jury brought an exceptional depth of experience, historical perspective, and sensory precision to the judging — few panels anywhere in the world possess such focused expertise in this category.

For the first time in BWW history, the title was awarded to Salon, triumphing with its magnificent 2012 vintage. A Champagne of breathtaking purity and precision, Salon 2012 impressed with its crystalline citrus profile, white flowers, chalky minerality, and extraordinary length. The wine combines tension and finesse with effortless authority — a textbook expression of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger at its most luminous and enduring.

Second place went to Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Rosé 2012, a wine already crowned Champagne of the Yearby Champagne Magazine. Deeply expressive yet impeccably refined, it offered layers of wild strawberry, blood orange, rose petal, and subtle spice, wrapped in silky texture and vibrant freshness.

Close behind followed two towering Champagnes of unmistakable character.
Krug 2011 delivered its signature breadth and complexity, revealing toasted brioche, citrus peel, roasted nuts, and smoky minerality, balanced by remarkable energy and structure.
Philipponnat Clos des Goisses 2015, from its legendary steep, south-facing vineyard, impressed with its powerful concentration, ripe stone fruit, saline chalkiness, and commanding finish, combining intensity with remarkable precision.

Perhaps the most surprising and talked-about Champagne of the competition emerged from an unexpected Franco-Australian collaboration: Thiénot × Penfolds Blanc de Noirs 2013. This unique Champagne captivated the jury with its rich red-fruited depth, notes of baked apple, spice, toasted hazelnut, and savory complexity, offering a bold yet harmonious expression that challenged traditional expectations — and succeeded brilliantly.

Although the jury tasted an extraordinary lineup of the world’s finest Champagnes, anticipation is already building for what comes next. We now look ahead with great excitement to the Top 100 Champagnes 2026 selection, which will begin in early 2026.

At BWW, Champagne is not merely judged — it is deeply understood, passionately celebrated, and honored at its very highest level.

BEST SWEET WINES OF THE WORLD

BWW 2025 – Sweet Wines at the Pinnacle of Precision and Purity

At the BWW 2025 – Best Wine of the World Competition, only 115 sweet and dessert wines were entered — yet from this remarkably high-quality field, just five wines were awarded. In terms of overall excellence and consistency, the sweet wine category proved to be perhaps the most evenly matched of all, with the Top 100 wines separated by a mere four-point margin.

Despite this extraordinary closeness, the winner was unmistakable. Château d’Yquem 2021 stood in a class of its own — a wine of such clarity, depth, and effortless authority that its victory was never in doubt. Yquem 2021 mesmerized the jury with its seamless balance of opulence and freshness, revealing layers of apricot, pineapple, candied citrus, saffron, honeycomb, and noble botrytis spice, all carried by astonishingly vibrant acidity and endless length. A modern classic — radiant, precise, and timeless.

Perhaps the most unexpected result came with second place, awarded to Germany: Weingut Robert Weil’s Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese 2019. This extraordinary wine captivated the panel with its laser-sharp precision and crystalline purity, offering notes of white peach, candied citrus peel, honey, exotic spice, and crushed slate, all delivered with breathtaking tension and elegance. A monumental Riesling that demonstrated once again Germany’s unrivaled mastery of sweet wines.

The remaining awarded wines all hailed from the legendary Sauternes region of France, reaffirming its enduring greatness. These wines impressed with their luxurious textures, deep botrytis complexity, and remarkable balance, showcasing classic profiles of ripe stone fruit, caramelized citrus, toasted almond, saffron, and floral honey, underpinned by freshness and finesse.

In this category above all others, the price-to-quality ratio proved to be truly exceptional. Compared with other wine styles, these sweet wines delivered an extraordinary level of craftsmanship, complexity, and aging potential at prices the jury considered remarkably modest.

In the opinion of the BWW jury, these magnificent wines deserve far greater recognition — and valuation — in the global market. At their best, sweet wines stand among the most complex and emotionally expressive wines in the world.

At BWW 2025, the sweet wine category reminded us that greatness does not always shout — sometimes, it unfolds slowly, with precision, patience, and profound beauty.

BEST FORTIFIED WINE OF THE WORLD

BWW 2025 – Port Wines: Power, Pleasure, and Timeless Greatness

At the BWW 2025 – Best Wine of the World Competition, only 50 Port wines were entered — yet from this highly selective field, just six wines reached award status. Port wine has long been one of the most challenging categories to judge, given its structure, sweetness, alcohol, and extraordinary longevity. However, over the past decade, a clear stylistic evolution has emerged: today’s greatest Ports are crafted to be more approachable in their youth, a trend increasingly visible across the wider wine world.

The judging itself proved to be a truly “delicious” experience. From the very first flight, it was clear that this was a category defined by depth, precision, and emotional impact.

The undisputed winner was the uncrowned king of Port wines:
Quinta do Noval Nacional Vintage Port 2020.

Already remarkably expressive, the 2020 Nacional astonished the jury with its extraordinary balance of power and finesse. Layers of blackberry, dark cherry, cassis, violets, exotic spice, cocoa, and crushed stone unfolded seamlessly, supported by monumental yet silky tannins and electrifying freshness. Despite its youth, the wine was profoundly pleasurable — prompting the head judge to recall the legendary, “out-of-this-world” 1931 Nacional, one of the greatest Ports ever made. A truly historic performance.

The battle for second place was extraordinarily close, fought between two icons of modern Port.
Niepoort Vintage Port 2022 and Fonseca Vintage Port 2017 were so evenly matched that only after three separate blind tastings was the jury able to establish a final ranking — with Niepoort ultimately claiming second place by a razor-thin margin of 0.2 points.

Niepoort 2022 impressed with its vivid purity and energy, offering notes of black plum, wild berries, floral lift, graphite, and spice, wrapped in refined structure and remarkable clarity.
Fonseca 2017 delivered classic depth and opulence, with ripe dark fruit, licorice, mocha, exotic spice, and velvety power, showcasing its signature richness and long, commanding finish.

Adding to the integrity of the judging process, Dirk Niepoort himself served on the jury — and, of course, formally recused himself from the evaluation of his own wine.

Beyond the winner, the Port category once again highlighted a striking reality: exceptional quality paired with chronic undervaluation. With the exception of Nacional, even the finest Ports suffer from weak price positioning relative to their greatness. In terms of complexity, structure, aging potential, and emotional impact, the world’s best Port wines stand shoulder to shoulder with the greatest wines on the planet — yet are priced at only a fraction of their peers.

At BWW 2025, the Port wine category served as a powerful reminder: greatness is not always reflected in price. For those who understand, Port remains one of the wine world’s most profound — and generous — treasures.

    BEST WINERY OF THE WORLD

    E. Guigal: The Power of Continuity

At BWW 2025, one estate stood above all others. E. Guigal was named Best Winery of the Year, having once again received the highest number of votes of any producer in the competition — a result that feels both inevitable and deeply deserved.

Guigal’s success is no coincidence. It is the outcome of an extraordinary family legacy, stretching back generations, built on patience, vision, and an uncompromising belief in quality. Over the past decades, the estate has achieved a remarkable ascent, transforming already great vineyards into some of the most consistently brilliant wines in the world.

What sets E. Guigal apart is not only excellence, but continuity — the rare ability to evolve without ever losing identity. Each generation has strengthened the foundation laid by the previous one, refining style, deepening precision, and elevating the estate’s global standing with unwavering purpose.

In BWW competitions, Guigal has repeatedly proven that greatness is not a single moment, but a sustained achievement. In 2025, the world’s wine community simply confirmed what it has come to know:

BEST NEW WINERY OF THE WORLD

Monteverro: A New Estate, Built Without Compromise

At BWW 2025, the title of Best New Winery of the Year was awarded to Monteverro — a remarkable achievement for an estate whose history is still young, yet whose impact has already been profound. Despite its relatively short lifespan, Monteverro once again garnered an exceptional number of votes, confirming its unique position among the world’s rising stars.

Monteverro was born from a clear vision: to create a world-class estate on the Tuscan coast, guided not by tradition alone, but by patience, precision, and absolute commitment to quality. From its very first vintage, the wines radiated ambition and clarity — not promise for the future, but excellence in the present.

What defines Monteverro above all is its relentless drive to improve. Vintage by vintage, the estate pushes forward with quiet determination, refining every detail, never settling, never rushing. This philosophy deeply resonated with the BWW jury, who sensed a strong kinship with the mindset behind estates like Harlan: a belief that the highest quality can only be achieved through focus, restraint, and long-term thinking.

Monteverro’s success at BWW is not the result of hype, but of discipline and direction. In 2025, the wine world recognized what has already become clear to those who follow closely:
Monteverro is not merely a promising new name — it is a future benchmark in the making.

    BEST WINEMAKER OF THE WORLD

When Less Becomes More: Nick Gislason at Screaming Eagle

At BWW 2025, the title of Winemaker of the Year was awarded to Nick Gislason of Screaming Eagle — a recognition reserved for those rare individuals whose work defines an era rather than a single vintage.

Gislason’s achievement is rooted in a philosophy of quiet precision and absolute restraint. At Screaming Eagle, nothing is hurried and nothing is left to chance. Every decision — from vineyard to cellar — is guided by patience, humility, and an unwavering respect for the site. The result is not excess, but clarity: wines of extraordinary purity, balance, and inner power.

What sets Nick Gislason apart is his ability to let greatness emerge naturally. He does not impose a style; he reveals one. Vintage after vintage, Screaming Eagle’s wines speak with a calm authority — seamless, composed, and unmistakably complete.

In honoring Nick Gislason, the BWW jury recognized more than technical mastery. They honored a winemaker who understands that the highest level of excellence is achieved not by doing more, but by knowing exactly when to do less.

At BWW 2025, the world simply confirmed what the wines have been saying all along:
Nick Gislason is one of the defining winemakers of our time.

BEST WINEMAKER OF THE WORLD 2025

    Nick Gislason, Screaming Eagle.

Philosophy in winemaking: “The thing about this vineyard, is that it has an innate and unique ability to produce wines that are simultaneously powerful, with a distinct personality, but also refined and elegant, perfumy, fresh, with silky tannin, fine and very long. They are vibrant wines, and this is a core part of their personality. In terms of farming and winemaking, we are working to respect those natural characteristics, those strengths, of the place. A naturalist farming approach helps us do that in the vineyard, and our winemaking is very adaptive to the specific needs of each season. We are working to try and manifest the most healthy and pleasurable expression of any given vintage. You might say our winemaking approach is more adaptive than prescriptive. Listening and paying close attention to the vineyard and the young wines is always the first step.” Nick Gislason emphasises.
