The Story

Bin 150 Marananga Shiraz is a sub-regional expression that is unmistakably Penfolds in character. Conceived from the ancient soils of Marananga, which lies very close to the centre of the Barossa Valley floor – slightly to the north and west, where warm dry conditions and rich red soils, provide the backbone to some of the regions best known wines.

Nose Fresh and perfumed, vibrant and lifted. Inviting. French oak cedar and clove noted, however, sandalwood, mahogany and burnt fig imply derivatives from fruit, rather than Quercus. Freshly ground coffee, clove and juniper redress a regional Barossa association.
Palate ; Bright, tense, energetic. So many epicurean-linked complexities – star anise orange zest roast duckling, balsamic glazed beetroot, olive tapenade, black pudding. But its Shiraz! Fresh acidity and savoury tannins facilitate both grip and a tight and defined structure. The disciplined use of varied oaks (new old French American) assist.

Written Notes

A wine oozing flavour. This should be very popular and deservedly so. Black cherries, boysenberries, bergamot notes. An expressive and exultant nose. Some choc notes emerge and just a hint of dry herbs. Really impressive. Supple and seamless with oodles of flavour. What is not to like? Finishes with good length and soft tannins.

Score: 93/100

Best drinking: cracking now and will be a joy for a decade.

Alc: 14.5%

Deep crimson. Aromatic wine with fresh dark plum, blackberry aromas with praline, mocha, herb garden notes. Generous and supple, almost plush in dimension, with sweet dark plum fruits, elderberry, liquorice notes, fine chalky chocolaty textures and underlying sweet vanilla hint marzipan oak notes. Finishes chalky firm, long and sweet. Archetypal Penfolds wine with superb ripe fruit expression, oak complexity and strong Barossa voice of place. Really good wine with the density, richness and balance to last the distance. Now - 2030
