Wine Description
The Story
Red Syrah – Merlot blend
A Syrah-Merlot blend in which the Syrah contributes freshness, spices and firm tannins and the Merlot offers fruit, soft tannins and velvety body. A singular wine which reflects its origins in the world's driest desert - the Atacama.
This wine is a blend of 58% Syrah and 42% Merlot, from ungrafted vines; grafting is unnecessary as Chile is free from Phylloxera.
The Merlot was harvested on 16 April and the Syrah on 5 May. Each variety was fermented separately in open 500-kilo tanks with native yeasts, using the Pinot Noir method with 2 or 3 daily pump overs for a week. The wine was then transferred straight into fifth use French barrels for malolactic fermentation. At the end of the fermentation process, there was a single addition of a small amount of SO2. The wine was neither clarified nor filtered.
This wine is a highly distinctive and complex blend. While the Syrah lends freshness, herbs, spices and firm tannins, the Merlot adds fruit, soft tannins and a velvety body.
It has an intense, youthful, almost blue colour. The aromas are a mix of black fruits, herbs and graphite. In the mouth it has a delicious acidity which provokes very interesting tension. This medium bodied wine has firm tannins and a long finish.
