The Story

St Henri is a time-honoured and alternative expression of Shiraz, and an intriguing counterpoint to Grange. It is unusual among high quality Australian red wines as it does not rely on any new oak. It was created in the early 1950s (first commercial vintage 1957) and gained a new lease of life in the 1990s as its quality and distinctive style became better understood. Proudly, a wine style that hasn’t succumbed to the dictates of fashion or commerce. St Henri is rich and plush when young, gaining soft, earthy, mocha-like characters as it ages. It is matured in old, 1460 litre vats that allow the wine to develop, imparting minimal, if any oak character. Although a small proportion of Cabernet is sometimes used to improve structure, the focal point for St Henri remains Shiraz.

Vintage 2009

Near-optimum rainfall over winter, followed by dry, mild conditions over spring provided a good environment for budburst and an ideal start to the growing season with canopies developing well. Climatic conditions favoured flowering and set with mild and calm weather, however there was some shatter in Shiraz across parts of the state resulting in small crops for many regions. Some early to mid-December summer rainfall was followed by conditions drying up very quickly and continuing until the end of February. Summer was hot with some extreme heat but cool conditions returned in February and March, allowing the fruit to ripen across a long harvest with balanced acidities and excellent tannin ripeness. An elegant, yet still powerful follow up to the conditions brought about in the preceding 2008 vintage

Written Notes

This is the antithesis of Grange, and even older – dating back to the 1800's, pre Penfold's. For 2009, the predominant source was Robe, as it was in 2000, with a number of other regions contributing. This vintage is 97% Shiraz and 3% Cabernet. It is rarely 100% Shiraz. In 1994, the Cabernet component was over 15% requiring, under Aussie wine law, a change of name from Shiraz to Shiraz Cabernet. Gago describes '09 as 'a classic sleeper vintage', and this is undoubtedly a very good St Henri. Alcohol is 14.5%, though you'd be hard pressed to pick it. It has spent 14 months in large old oak, often more than 50 years of age. It never sees small or new oak – this is all fruit! A gentle wine with cuddly dark fruits, olives and cloves. There is a mix of blackfruits, ouzo notes, campfire characters, salami, a hint of a character reminiscent of blackened Cajun flavours, which really add some complexity, and it finishes with a touch of a sour cherry hint. Very fine tannins. This is much more restrained than many of the Penfold's range. Seamless. A lovely St Henri with a big future.

This is some how a hippy wine in well-trimmed Penfolds range. A wine that stands out with its red fruit, fig and plum character. Very delicate with oxidative character. Complex and sincere Shiraz with great concentration.
