CWT stands for Chinese Winemaking Trial, representing Penfolds' exploration of China's premier wine-growing regions. The name numerical code reflects its sourcing: 5 for Shangri-La (Yunnan province) and 21 for Ningxia (Helan Mountain East Foothills). The blend pairs Cabernet Sauvignon (providing classical structure and cassis fruit) with Marselan (a cross of Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache, contributing rich color, plush texture, and dark floral aromatics), aged in a combination of French and American oak.


High-toned aromatics lift immediately, showing black currant, wild blueberry compote, red cherry, and dried goji berry, underpinned by dried osmanthus flower, dark cocoa, and subtle sweet dill from the American oak. The palate is medium-to-full-bodied and agile, featuring a bright line of natural acidity. The Cabernet provides a fine, gravelly tannin frame, while the Marselan fills out the mid-palate with plush dark berry flesh, finishing clean, savory, and mineral-edged.
