The Story

Since 1844, Penfolds has played a pivotal role in the evolution of winemaking with a history and heritage that profoundly reflects Australia’s journey from colonial settlement to the modern era. The stories and philosophies behind each label bring a timeless quality, making Penfolds wines special and compelling for collectors and drinkers the world over.

Launched in 1998 with the 1995 vintage, Penfolds Yattarna Chardonnay was the result of one of the most comprehensive and highly publicised wine development programs ever conducted in Australia. The aspiration and independence of mind that the late Max Schubert brought to Penfolds winemaking philosophy inspired the winery to embark on the project of creating a white wine that would one day rival the standards of Penfolds Grange.Yattarna reflects Penfolds patience and continued commitment to this goal, its very name being drawn from the Aboriginal, meaning 'little by little, gradually'. Each vintage provides the opportunity to further raise the quality horizon.

Written Notes

Of the three Chardonnays in the Collection, the Yattarna Chardonnay 2019 (AUD$175) runs away with the honors. A blend of fruit from Tasmania, Tumbarumba, and the Adelaide Hills, this is a Yattarna for the ages. Stunning.

Inevitably, such a wine gets compared to the great French white Burgundies. Different, of course, but for me it is better than many lesser Grand Crus and surely at least the equal of the very finest Premier Crus. This, in turn, makes it amazing value. 97.

Pale lemon yellow. Apples, lemons, fruit driven, spices, nuanced, intense nose. Fresh acidity, apples, lemons, minerals, vanilla, fruit driven, candied lemons, long finish. 94

Powerful flinty aromas and smoky oak. Stylish, lengthy, perhaps less full than it used to be, but far from lean. You could slip this into a top-end burgundy tasting and nobody would blink

Light, green-tinged yellow. Mineral-accented nectarine, Anjou pear, lemon pith, iodine and white flowers on the intensely perfumed nose. Taut and dry in the mouth, the 2019 offers concentrated orchard and citrus fruit flavors that are complemented by suggestions of sweet butter, tarragon and vanilla. Shows superb depth as well as energy, finishing minerally and impressively long, with lingering citrus fruit, oyster shell and floral notes. Made in 55% new French oak.

Pale gold. Sensational nectarine, white peach, orange glace, lemon peel aromas with lifted gun flint, sea spray notes. Beautifully concentrated and minerally with complex nectarine, white peach, apricot, grilled almond flavours, fine supple/ silky textures, lovely mid-palate viscosity and underlying pure mineral acidity. Generously proportioned, refined and beautifully integrated with all the hallmarks of a Grand Cru-type Chardonnay. A fantastic experience for Burgundy freaks and those who aspire to surf the perfect reductive wave.

Mineral, slinky, powerful, saline… this is pretty fricken phenom. All the grilled peach, curry leaf, brine, coriander root, ginger, poached pear, red apple skin and a feast of crushed, toasted, shaved nuts. This is an astounding release, and as compared to its forebearer, this shows restraint and form…. It’s a little more austere, a little more structured, and a little less immediately welcoming, but I like it for that. Yew.
