The Story

The single-vineyard Magill Estate Shiraz is intrinsically linked to Penfolds beginnings. Sourced from the original Magill vineyard on the edge of Adelaide’s eastern suburbs.

Fruit is crushed, fermented and matured on-site at the original Penfolds Magill winery, established in 1844. Magill Estate Shiraz is an elegant, medium-weight style with velvety texture and fine tannins, matured in both French and American oak. It is a sleek, contemporary wine, yet crafted the original way: hand-picked, vinified in open fermenters and then basket pressed to complete fermentation in barrel.

Ruby. Blackberries, anise, spices, rich and fruit driven nose, layered and intense, deep. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, dark fruits, anise, spices, blackberries and spices, detailed, minerals beneath, red fruits, cherries freshness yet deep and rich, long finish. Stunning Magill!. 97

Extra full-bodied, very tannic, blackcurrant notes, dark cherry notes, boysenberry notes, chocolaty, black pepper notes, oak notes, rich, full-bodied, warm, long

Glass-staining ruby. Potent black/blue fruit and violet aromas are brightened by suggestions of coconut, smoky minerals, incense and cola. Rich but focused and energetic on the palate, offering concentrated cherry and dark berry liqueur flavors, building spicecake, licorice and floral pastille notes. Youthfully chewy and tightly focused on a wonderfully long finish that leaves behind espresso, floral and dark berry preserve notes.

Deep crimson. Intense blackberry, dark cherry, praline mocha aromas with herb garden aniseed notes. Generous, supple, and inky textured with smooth deep-set blackberry, dark cherry, plum, dark chocolate flavours, fine grainy tannins and underlying roasted chestnut vanilla oak notes. Finishes gravelly firm with plentiful dark berried fruits, savoury complexity and beautiful mineral length. An impressive vintage with lovely density, generosity, and vigour. Seal; Cork, Drink 2024-2040 14.5% 95 points

A single vineyard “monopole” wine. From one of the last patches of 19th Century vineyard land in Adelaide.

18 months in 26% new French, 6% new American and 68% seasoned oak hogsheads

  • 95p

Shiraz, 18 months in French oak (26% new) and American oak (6% new).

Supple, slinky, intense, concentrated, pretty, restrained… jeez this is lovely. So lovely. It has body and line that carries long into the finish, but the face of things is perpetuated by a seductiveness that just makes it so, damn, beautiful. Not a beast. Beguiling. Dark cocoa, liquorice, raspberry, blackberry, kirsch and Szechuan.
