The Story

The Sorì Tildìn vineyard is named after the beloved matriarch of the GAJA family, Clotilde Rey, daughter-in-law of founder Giovanni Gaja. Known for her strong personality, the adored Clotilde was affectionately known by the nickname Tildìn (teel-DEEN), a diminutive of her Christian name.

Like the Sorì San Lorenzo, Sorì Tildìn is widely considered one of the greatest growing sites in Italy today. Purchased in 1967, the 8-acre vineyard is situated in the township of Barbaresco. It was first vinified as a single-vineyard wine in 1970 (reclassified as a Langhe DOC in 2000 like the Sorì San Lorenzo). Sorì Tildìn delivers a round, subtly textured expression of Nebbiolo, and will age superbly for more than 40 years in exceptional vintages.

Wine Information

Hillside Wines
Harvesting of the three individual vineyards usually begins with Sori Tildin. Angelo bought the parcel in 1967 and named it after his grandmother, Clotilde Rey. The south-facing, sunny hill, sori in Italian, is always washed over by a light breeze. It is the highest of all the vineyards and, thanks to its location and inward-turned hill formation, it offers a very warm microclimate for the grapes.
The eponymous wine has refined fruity notes and is the most open of the three single-vineyard wines. Also Sori San Lorenzo, which Angelo bought already in 1964, faces the south. It is one of the family’s most beautiful vineyards. The wine from that vineyard has an aging potential of over 40 years, and the characteristic properties of the Nebbiolo are at their best here. Sori San Lorenzo is the strongest and most masculine wine of the three.
It usually requires a bottle aging time of at least 10-15 years, whereas Sori Tildin is known for its more feminine, elegant quality. Costa Russi, located at a lower altitude than Sori Tildin, has a cooler microclimate. Bought at the same time as Sori Tildin, Costa Russi is only a stone’s throw away. All three single-vineyard Barbarescos share their grape blend: 95% Nebbiolo and 5% Barbera.

Written Notes

We finally sat down, and in honor of the truffles, many of us brought Italian wines. We began with a magnum of 1971 Gaja Sori San Lorenzo, by way of the Golden Cellar, actually. The wine was a beauty, possessing great cherry fruit and tender dust, earth and leather complements, but this was a wine that was fully mature, on a plateau and all about its fruit. It caressed the palate with grace and style

Evolved, tawny colour. Rich and evolved nose shows complex earthy and leathery aromas with prunes and root vegetables combined with touch of orange peel, Medium-bodied palate, vivid acidity and mellow tannins. The fruit is balancing the palate with its lovely strawberry character. A long, mineral and concentrated finish with smooth and supple structure. An elegant and energetic wine.
