Wine Information

Throughout 2013, the weather was generally colder than normal, and there was abundant rain from spring to summer. After the warm and dry 2012, these cool, humid conditions greatly helped the soils. We consider 2013 a great, classic Piedmontese vintage, both in terms of temperature ranges and harvest timing. The April and May rainsslowed down the blossoming by at least two weeks, and the cool summer maintained this trend. These conditions allowed for a slow and constant ripening of grapes along with an intense concentration of flavours and acidity. Starting in September, temperatures and sunlight increased, leading to a favorable concentration and perfect phenolic maturation. THe harvest of Nebbiolo began on October 22nd. The weather conditions during the picking were characterized by bright, sunny days and a strong diurnal temperature variation. The grapes entered the cellar in perfect condition and showed great ripeness and freshness, with approriate alcohol potential.

Written Notes

This is a wine to buy by the case. 2013 threw a lot of wild weather at Angelo Gaja, and this Barbaresco bottling illustrates that he and daughter Gaia handled it with aplomb. Sophisticated and silky, this ’13 Barbaresco frames its pure red and blue fruits with crushed violets, fresh-cut herbs, licorice, sun-warmed earth, and a kiss of kirsch. Wrapping the palate with an energetic yet velvety grip, this wine builds to a crescendo of chewy tannins that are complemented by a sweet inner perfume--it’s outstanding. A mono-varietal Nebbiolo and Gaja’s only wine that adheres to DOCG regimen, this Barbaresco honors Gaja’s winemaking heritage in its blending across fourteen separate vineyards for this bottling. Gaja ferments each vineyard lot separately in temperature-controlled stainless steel for about three weeks, and malolactic fermentation occurs in barrique. After fermentation, the separate wines mature for a year in barrique; Gaja makes its final blend, and the wine ages in botti for another year before bottling.

Good looking normal size bottle. Colour is ruby red and medium. On the nose it is open, intense, youthful, refined, seductive, charming and ripe. The taste is fresh, harmonious, fruity, perfumed, vivid, refined, with silky tannins, sweet tannins, and average in acidity, medium-bodied, with perfectly balanced structure and youthful. On the palate it is layered and has cherry, raspberry, violet and perfumed flavours. The finish is long, round, lingering, flavorful and vibrant. This wine is sophisticated, fine and impressive. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 10-15 years and decant at least 2h before tasting.
