The Story

This wine made history when it became one of the earliest single-vineyard bottlings of Nebbiolo in Piedmont with the 1967 vintage. Sourced from the GAJA winery's top growing site, San Lorenzo, located just south of the village of Barbaresco in the famed cru Secondine, the wine is made with 95% Nebbiolo grapes and 5% Barbera. Written Notes

Coffee, licorice and baker's spices overshadow the more delicate cherry and berry aromas and flavors in this tightly wound, linear red. But the length and vibrant structure keep this pulsating through the finish, where a mineral accent emerges. Best from 2015 through 2030.

Sorì San Lorenzo, Gaja’s first cru, embodies the drive behind the vision to craft a single-vineyard Barbaresco. Powerful and austere, the Sorì San Lorenzo demands time to fully realize its potential, but if you can hold off opening your bottle, you’ll be rewarded with a towering wine with all the brooding power of Montgomery Cliff and all the elegance of Gene Kelley. Crystalline in its purity, textured in its complexity and rife with ripe black berries, coffee and violets, Gaja’s San Lorenzo will reliably amaze even a jaded wine drinker.

Bright pale ruby. Intense nose of chocolate, tar, roses violets and just a touch volatile? Something feels ethereal on the nose at least. Fresh acidity, high of ripe tannins. Not as intense as some vintages, again rounded fruit. This needs time to come together. 90 for now.
