Bordeaux

The 1969 Bordeaux vintage stands as a challenging, high-acid, and structurally light harvest defined by a cool, damp spring that delayed flowering and led to significant coulure, followed by a warm August and destructive September harvest rains that diluted the ripening grapes. Harvested under rainy, humid conditions across both the Left and Right Banks, châteaux had to contend with low sugar levels and rot, forcing strict selection; top properties—such as Château Pétrus, Château Haut-Brion, Château Cheval Blanc, and Château Latour—crafted light-to-medium-bodied, lean, and high-acid wines that favored immediate drinking over long-term aging. Over the decades, these fragile reds shed their modest fruit concentration to reveal secondary and tertiary signatures dominated by tart red currants, dried autumn leaves, cedar, graphite, damp earth, and tobacco leaf, with the vast majority reaching full decline long before the turn of the century.

Burgundy

The 1969 Burgundy harvest stands as one of the most high-acid, and structurally precise red vintages of the 20th century, characterized by a cool, damp spring that severely limited yields through coulure, followed by an exceptionally dry, warm late summer and crisp, sun-drenched autumn that allowed Pinot Noir and Chardonnay to achieve complete phenolic maturity while preserving searing natural acidity. Harvested under ideal conditions through early October, top cuvées—led by legendary releases from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Maison Joseph Drouhin, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau—traded broad, solar warmth for weightless density, architectural tannin structures, and high-toned aromatic lift. Over more than five decades of bottle age, these aristocratic reds evolved from tightly wound, energetic young wines into breathtaking tertiary masterpieces, displaying soaring scents of dried wild raspberries, crushed rose petals, damp moss, shaved black truffle, sandalwood, and sweet leather, supported by an immortal, limestone-driven acid spine that continues to sustain pristine bottles to this day.

Champagne

The 1969 Champagne harvest stands as an good, high-acid, and profoundly long-lived benchmark for vintage declarations across the Montagne de Reims, Côte des Blancs, and Vallée de la Marne. Following a cool, wet spring that severely restricted crop yields through coulure, the growing season was saved by an intensely hot, dry August and a sun-drenched, crisp September that pushed Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to high natural sugar levels while preserving searing, structural acidity.

Harvested under dry, pristine conditions through early October, top Houses and single-terroir growers produced concentrated, muscular, and deeply vinous cuvées—led by immortal, high-toned declarations like Dom Pérignon, Krug, Bollinger, and Taittinger Comtes de Champagne—that traded immediate softness for extraordinary autolytic tension and multi-decade longevity. Over more than five decades of bottle age, these monumental Champagnes evolved from tightly wound, citrus-driven wines into ethereal tertiary masterpieces, releasing soaring aromas of dried apricot, candied orange peel, toasted hazelnut, brioche, smoked honey, and damp forest floor, all bound by an electric, mouthwatering saline minerality.

California

The 1969 California wine harvest stands as a watershed, high-acid vintage for Northern California—most notably Napa Valley, Santa Cruz Mountains, and Sonoma—marked by a cool-to-temperate growing season that favored precision, low alcohol, and classical structural longevity. Harvested under ideal, dry autumn weather in late September and early October, top Cabernet Sauvignon releases—led by historic, benchmark bottlings from Mayacamas, Chappellet, Beaulieu Vineyard (Georges de Latour Private Reserve), and Robert Mondavi—traded high sugar density and plush fruit for linear drive, high natural acidity, and firm, architectural tannins. Over nearly six decades of cellar evolution, these foundational wines evolved from tightly wound red-fruited classics into deeply complex tertiary masterpieces, offering aromatic layers of dried cranberries, cedar, cigar box, eucalyptus, graphite, leather, and forest floor, representing the pinnacle of California's mid-century golden era of cellaring.

Australia

Australia / The third wettest winter in half a century followed onto a wet, late vintage with growers and wineries fearing a disaster. While the season produced record yields it also led to disease pressure and poor set and the resultant red wines were “ordinary” and have not lasted.

In 1969 there were 7,076 hectares of vineyards in Barossa and 30,273 tonnes of wine grapes were crushed in that vintage.

The widespread appearance of downy mildew in the Barossa, which was traditionally a low-disease risk grape growing region, caused such severe damage that some leading wines were not made that year and many wines were subject to lactase attack.

The Riverland led the Barossa in the development of new labour saving technology such as machine harvesting and also the introduction of drip irrigation. Nevertheless, more than 60% of Barossa growers were using some form of supplementary irrigation in 1969, particularly furrow irrigation from creeks. An awareness of the negative aspect of irrigation was noticed following measurements of salinity fluctuations.

Marginal increases in grape prices were paid in 1969, due to the demand for better quality fruit grown in the Barossa compared with the Riverland.

A major expansion took place at Leo Buring raising capacity from 1,700 tonnes to 10,000 tonnes. This included a new vintage cellar, new crushing facilities, a new concept in red fermentation using stainless steel jetting tanks, new pressure fermentation vessels for the production of Sparkling Rhinegolde, a new bottling line and extra refrigeration.

Tollana planted the largest contoured vineyard in Australia at Woodbury in the Eden Valley, to prevent soil erosion and moisture loss.

Kies Family Wines was established at Lyndoch.

Italia

The 1969 Italian wine harvest stands as a classic, high-acid, and structurally taut vintage across Northern and Central Italy, defined by a cool, protracted spring and early summer followed by a dry, sunny late August and September that allowed Nebbiolo and Sangiovese to achieve steady phenolic maturity alongside bright natural acidity. Harvested under favorable, dry autumn conditions through mid-October, top producers—led by traditional benchmark bottlings from Giacomo Conterno (Barolo Monfortino), Bartolo Mascarello, Vietti, and Biondi-Santi—traded massive extraction and heavy body for high-toned aromatic lift, linear drive, and long structural evolution. Over more than five decades of cellar age, these classical Italian reds developed into ethereal tertiary classics, displaying complex aromas of dried rose petals, tar, orange zest, leather, dried cherries, white truffle, and sweet tobacco, all sustained by an enduring, mouthwatering backbone of freshness and mineral grip.

Portugal

The 1969 Spanish wine harvest stands as an elegant, high-acid, and classic vintage for Rioja and Ribera del Duero, characterized by a cool spring and a dry, mild growing season that favored late ripening, precise structural balance, and vibrant acidity over high alcohol or heavy density. Harvested under pristine autumn conditions across October, traditional benchmark producers—led by long-aged Gran Reserva releases from Vega Sicilia (Único), La Rioja Alta (890 and 904), CVNE (Imperial), Marqués de Murrieta (Castillo Ygay), and López de Heredia—employed extended cask aging in American oak to tame the vintage's natural freshness and firm tannin profile. Over more than five decades of cellar evolution, these classic Spanish reds transformed into refined, high-toned tertiary masterpieces, offering ethereal aromas of dried red cherries, dill, cigar box, leather, dried citrus peel, sandalwood, vanilla bean, and sweet tobacco leaf, all supported by an enduring, mouthwatering backbone of acidity and savory mineral drive.

Germany

The 1969 German Riesling harvest stands as an exceptional, high-acid, and classic vintage across the Mosel, Rheingau, and Rheinhessen, characterized by a cool spring that lowered yields, followed by a hot, dry late summer and an extended, sunny autumn that allowed grapes to reach high ripeness levels alongside vibrant natural acidity. Harvested late into November under cool, crisp conditions, legendary producers—such as Joh. Jos. Prüm, Egon Müller, Schloss Vollrads, and Kloster Eberbach—crafted intensely focused, precise, and structural Auslese, Beerenauslese, and Trockenbeerenauslese bottlings that favored razor-sharp mineral tension over heavy botrytis opacity. Over more than five decades of bottle age, these crystalline Rieslings evolved into breathtaking tertiary masterpieces, displaying complex aromas of candied lemon peel, dried apricot, petrol, honeycomb, beeswax, saffron, and crushed slate, all preserved by an electric, age-defying spine of natural acidity.

Rhöne Vintage Report by Jaboulet: The total harvest of the Côtes du Rhône wines is 678,345 Hl. In the northernmost part, the grape harvests began on the 23rd. September and finished on the 18th. October. Winter not cold enough, not too cold in Spring. In June, the heating has to be put back on: something unheard of in living memory. The warm days arrive in July and August is a good month. The harvest goes well. There is a large crop and the grapes are healthy. We have good red wines that will keep well, with rich colour.
The white wines are correct: fruity and well balanced with acidity. They are elegant

Burgundy vintage Report:  Classic vintage of well-constituted wines.

A cold rainy spring was followed by a hot dry summer with some drought problems here and there. The ripening of the grapes was slowed down by wet and cold weather until mid-September, but fine and dry weather leading up to the harvest enabled optimal maturation.

The 1969 reds were never charming and always a bit reserved behind their tannins. Now fully mature, this is a vintage to look out for, especially bottles from cool cellars — as always, storage conditions are key to the development and survival of old wines.

Bordeaux: An unexceptional winter was followed by bad spring weather. June continued cold, but July and August saw a rise in temperatures and reasonable amounts of sunshine. Rain fell throughout the first fortnight of September, but warm, sunny weather afterwards continued until the harvest – of a very small crop – in early October. Most of the reds proved to be a great disappointment, dry, short and acid.

VUOSIKERTA

1969 On July 20th one of mans crowning achievements occurred when American Astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the Moon and uttered the immortal words "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." . The opposition to the war continued to increase with more and more attending anti war demonstrations and demanding that the US withdrew from Vietnam. The music came from groups including the Doors, Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin and the Beatles and the most famous music festival of modern times "WOODSTOCK" took place on a New York Farm on August 15th to August 17th with more than 400,000 avid music fans attending to see the Who, Jimi Hendrix, Crosby Stills Nash and Young and others perform live. fashions reflected the anti war sentiment with military jackets adorned with peace signs, and other trends including long unkempt wild hair and headbands showed the feelings of anti establishment felt by the youth.
