The Story

Château Haut-Brion is the oldest and by far the smallest of the "Premiers Grands Crus" vineyards of the Gironde 1855 classification. Château Haut-Brion is one of the few remaining family-owned domains of the Bordeaux region with a history going back to the 16th century. It has been owned by the American Dillon family since 1935.

1967/ This wine has a saturated terracota colour which is to be expected given its age. It is a delicate elegant wine which still benefits from beautiful soft and silky tannins. Written Notes

A fine bottle. Decanted only 15 minutes. Quite a weak colour and a little tight on the nose. I decanted it too little, but happily after 45 minutes it opened up. Then it was ripe, fresh, and velvety on the nose.  Still some tannin left, but they are not as refined as in the best of recent vintages like 1961 and 1966. Good backbone and intensity though, and no lack of fruit. But slightly robust and a harshness at the end.

Then came the 1967 vintage which showed plenty of earthy complexity and some bright cherry characters. The most interesting feature was the fine bony tannin structure, which together with earthy/chocolate flavours created an impression of suppleness on the palate (88/100 points)
