The Story

Château Haut-Brion is the oldest and by far the smallest of the "Premiers Grands Crus" vineyards of the Gironde 1855 classification. Château Haut-Brion is one of the few remaining family-owned domains of the Bordeaux region with a history going back to the 16th century. It has been owned by the American Dillon family since 1935.

There is an amazing dual hit of black fruit and fine-grained tannins here, which is rounded off with a wonde...

Vintage 2022

Bordeaux 2022 vintage will stay in the memory of the world of wine as the exceptional vintage which kept a lot of surprises. The year started well with bud break at a normal date, so the frost in early April did not too much damage. The flowering started in mid-May and in optimal conditions. June brought stormy rains which were able to partially reconstitute de water reserves of the soil, however hail fell locally with sometimes very important...

Written Notes

53.6% Merlot, 35.4% C. Sauvignon and 11% C. Franc. 14.5% alcohol. Intensely aromatic blackcurrants, tobacco leaf, cigar box, great acidity, splendid complexity, vibrant and sophisticated-Long and sensual finish. Spectacularly sublime for the vintage. 99p.

My tasting with Jean-Philippe Delmas was one of the highlights of the two weeks I spent in Bordeaux for this report. The 2022 reds at Haut-Brion and La Mission Haut-Brion are rich, heady wines. Yields were 35 hectoliters per hectare at Haut-Brion and just 28 at La Mission Haut-Brion, the lowest at La Mission since 1991. I found all four reds compelling. The whites, from the earliest harvest since 2003, are also terrific, even if they don't quite reach the level of the reds.

Cassis, blackberries, blueberries, scented, lifted, some spices, layered and nuanced nose, intense, rich, layered and deep, some minerals beneath.
Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, blackberries, anise, juicy, energetic, layered, deep, intense, incredible how it pushes your taste buds, danses walse over your tongue. Goes on and and and playful, refined and incredibly detailed, the "pixels" is amazing. pH 3,83

Currants and cedar with sandalwood and peaches. Fascinating aromas. Violets. Full-bodied with a crunchy and electric palate of primary fruit, with hints of tangerines and citrus. Great finish with structure and polish. 53.6% merlot, 35.4% cabernet sauvignon and 11% cabernet franc. Interesting to have such high merlot in the blend. 98-99

Intense purple colour with violet hue and black core. Expressive and complex nose with very refined fruit reminiscent of ripe blackcurrants, hints of graphite, cedar wood in the background, blackcurrants spurs and blackberries. Fine floral hints turning up after some oxygen contact. On the palate excellent depth and length, a great wine, the palate quotes the nose. A wine with freshness and fine minerality balanced by very juicy fruit. A very promising bottle with stunning potential.
