A blend of 52.3% Merlot, 38.6% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 9.1% Cabernet Franc, the 2023 Haut-Brion has a pH of 3.7 and a deep garnet-purple color. It is quite closed to begin, needing a lot of patient swirling to coax out notes of plum preserves, black cherry compote, and wild blueberries, leading to perfumed hints of peonies, crushed stones, rose bud tea, and licorice, with a touch of wood smoke. The medium to full- bodied palate delivers black ...

The Story

Château Haut-Brion is the oldest and by far the smallest of the "Premiers Grands Crus" vineyards of the Gironde 1855 classification. Château Haut-Brion is one of the few remaining family-owned domains of the Bordeaux region with a history going back to the 16th century. It has been owned by the American Dillon family since 1935.

There is an amazing dual hit of black fruit and fine-grained tannins here, which is rounded off with a wonde...

Wine Information

Opulent and laden with black fruit on the nose, this has notes of liquorice, nutmeg, cassis and damsons. The ripe Cabernet at the core offers ample black fruit, but there is a persistent backbone of ripe tannin that provides real focus and vertical intensity. The texture is very refined, supple but always present. The cassis and kirsch is rich for the vintage, giving a slight warmth, but this seductive, hedonistic Haut Brion is a triumph. Very...

Vintage 2023

Challenges and triumphs: the 2023 vintage in Bordeaux

The Bordeaux wine region has long been revered for its exceptional wines, shaped by a delicate dance between nature and human skill. However, the 2023 vintage was proof of the resilience and adaptability of winegrowers in the face of difficult weather conditions. From the relentless weather conditions to the current activity in the vineyards in November, this year has been a rollercoaste...

Written Notes

Tasted in April 2024. 52.3% Merlot, 38.6% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9.1% Cabernet Franc. 14.6% alcohol. It exhibits highly aromatic blackcurrants, with notes of leather, tobacco leaf, and cigar box. It has great acidity, a strong backbone, exceptional complexity, and is vibrant and sophisticated, with a long and sensual finish. It's spectacular for the vintage.

  • 98p

Puissant, net, charnu, avec cette année une petite dominante de merlots plutôt fermes tout en étant dans un registre propre au cabernet. Grand avenir.

  • 97p

Deep garnet, opaque core, purple reflections. Delicate spicy nuances, a hint of herbal savouriness, bitumen, blackberryish fruit, subtle hint of liquorice, multi-faceted bouquet with a touch of fine oak. Complex on the palate, full-bodied and taut, fine red cherry notes, integrated with supporting tannins, freshly structured, mineral and salty; a long-distance runner.

  • 97p

Blackberries, blueberries, scented, fruit driven, fruit forward, nuanced, detailed and deep nose, yet lifted. Floral high notes.
Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, detailed, nuanced, juicy, some spices, liquorice, bright and elegant, lovely balance, incredible freshness and liveliness, saline notes. When you think the aftertaste ends, it comes back and you get another impressive round of flavours. 99-100

  • 100p

This is tight, yet so upright and proper, with a vertical line of fine tannin that runs true and deep. It’s medium- to full-bodied with an exquisite texture and a long, structured finish. 52.3% merlot, 38.6% cabernet sauvignon and 9.1% cabernet franc. 98-99

  • 99p

Dark purple colour with violet hue and black core. Energetic nose with vibrant fruit, reminiscent of ripe blackcurrants and elderberries, black cherries complemented by hints of graphite, subtle oak and oriental spices. On the palate complex with fine tension, excellent depth and length, multi-layered finish with charming balance. Again Haut-Brion proves its excellent terroir and the team of Haut-Brion the intelligence to interpret this terroir in a perfect manner.

Inside Information

As part of this year’s Bordeaux En Primeur campaign,  Château Haut-Brion 2023 has been released at €312 per bottle ex-négociant, down 39.5% on the 2022 release (€516 per bottle).

It is being offered by the international trade for £3,780 per 12×75, a 38.8% decrease on the 2022’s opening price (£6,180 a case).  At this price, today’s release offers up reasonable value. There are options in back-vintages for buyers interested in other opportunities.

‘There is real pedigree to this First Growth’ said Neal Martin (Vinous), who awarded the 2023 a barrel score of 96-98 points. He praised the wine’s ‘superb energy’ and ‘crescendo of flavours toward a complex and persistent finish’.

Jane Anson was effusive in her praise, describing this ‘exceptional’ vintage as offering ‘juice and elegant balance alongside classically structured layers, generous but restrained, a sense of architecture and the building blocks of a truly great Left Bank wine’. She awarded the wine a potentially perfect 98-100 points – a score she gave to only four wines this year.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (The Wine Independent) also awarded 98-100 points, praising its ‘jaw-dropping energy, accented by mineral and exotic spice notes and supported with a firm backbone’.

Antonio Galloni (Vinous) gave a score of 95-97 points, calling the wine ‘potent, dazzling and sumptuous’.

William Kelley (The Wine Advocate), awarding 95-97 points, said the wine ‘offers up a deep but youthfully reserved bouquet of dark wild berries, licorice, smoke and pencil lead mingled with notions of cigar wrapper, nicely integrated new oak and spices’.
