Some found 'better than the 1959,' myself included, photo-finish required. This bottle had come from an original wooden case, which never hurts. Sweet, nutty, chocolaty and meaty, there were great aromas of musk oil, peanut, carob, cassis and plum. This was sexy juice! The palate was rich and creamy, possessing great acid and divine cedar flavors. Long and outstanding, the 1955 held its own if not more than its esteemed brethren from 1959 and 1961

One hour of decanting had wonderfully opened this lovely-looking 1955 Mouton, and its nose in the glass was open and charming with lots of berries, vanilla and a touch of cellar. The mouth feel was extremely refined. The opulent, full wine was so delicately perfect that it required its taster to really concentrate and put his soul into the exercise. The wine was not as aggressively full as Mouton sometimes is, but if you dare to close your eyes with this wine to see better, the result is almost a religious experience. An intellectual, multilayered and balanced wine. The strong aftertaste lingered in my thoughts for a long time. A wine you feel you should kneel down before and meditate.

This bottle of 1955 Château Mouton-Rothschild had a rather bad filling level with low shoulder. The bigger was the surprise in the glass. Decanted 10 minutes before serving, this wine showed a dense, brick red colour with mahogany hue. The nose was very mature, however signs of oxidations vanished with the air contact. After 40 minutes in the glass it displayed an aroma reminiscent of cedarwood, Cuban cigars, hints of dried elderberries and a discreet touch of balmy spices. On the palate the character was rather refined with elegant acidity and mild tannins. The flavour was quoting the aromatic expression of the nose, a wine with great character, depth and length, surprisingly well preserved although the filling level was lower shoulder.

Parker 97 points / The 1955 should be a vintage to buy at auction as I suspect the price is more reasonable than what such acclaimed vintages as 1959 and 1961 fetch. The color reveals no amber or rust, only a slight lightening of intensity at the edge. The nose offers up that explosive Mouton perfume of mint, leather, cassis, black olives, and lead pencil. In the mouth, there is stunning concentration, magnificent extraction of fruit, and plenty of tannin in the long finish. The wine still tastes remarkably young and could easily last another 20-30 years. Amazing!
