Vintage 1978

Bordeaux Vintage Report / 1978 turned out to be a very good vintage particularly in Pauillac and St Julien.

“The miracle vintage”. Just about everything that could go wrong went wrong until mid-August. But thanks to the beautiful sun and the heat from that moment on, the vintage was saved. The best wines come from Médoc and Graves. Château La Mission Haut Brion produces the wine of the vintage. I had very good bottles of Châteaux Margaux, L...

Written Notes

Excellent looking half-bottle. Not the darkest colour I've seen but had some good depth with a touch of purple. This is one of those odd wines that never taste the same as the previous bottle. I have had only few outstanding bottles, with the rest being uninteresting and poor wines. Anyway, this was one of the good guys with clean, open mint nose. An elegant, medium-bodied wine with firm body. Perhaps a bit too acidic for my taste, but otherwise fairly well balanced with plenty of soft tannins and concentrated fruit. The finish was quite simple, dry and short. More enhanced than expected, but not groovy. At its peak now and will not improve.

The 1978 Mouton Rothschild was another pleasant Mouton with a nice nose and more fruit than I expected. A hint of wood accompanied great charcoal and spice in this kicker of a nose. It seemed almost more Margaux than Mouton, and someone observed, ‘light body but full flavor concentration’ (90).

A level fill, soaked cork. Ruby with brick rim. Leather, somewhat exotic, cassis, plums, cherries, rich if not too intense nose, spices and sweet tobacco. Fresh acidity, tannins soon gone, somewhat lean, mouthwatering if not a great Mouton, it manages to give more pleasure than most wines at this score. 90
