Wine Advocate 86 points

The 1991 exhibits a moderately dark ruby/purple color, as well as a promising and complex nose of such classic Pauillac aromas as lead pencil, roasted nuts, and ripe cassis. The initial richness is quickly obliterated by frightful levels of tannin, and a tough, hard finish. Although there is an interesting and alluring dimension to this wine, the tannin level is excessively high and the wine is likely to dry out aft...

Wine Information

Château Mouton Rothschild 1991

Climatic conditions
A cold winter was followed by a mild spring which encouraged early growth of the vine.
A frost on 21 April caused considerable damage but Château Mouton Rothschild, Château d’Armailhac and Château Clerc Milon were spared thanks to their favourable situation. The crop matured well in a fine, hot summer and the harvest began under excellent conditions.

Harvest 27 September to 12 October

Written Notes

he last four wines only got a couple of comments out of me each at this point, so I will put them all in this last paragraph. The 1991 Mouton Rothschild was yeasty and unpleasant, a bit tutti frutti at this point (82).

Ruby with starting orange rim. Classic Pauillac, elegant, maturing, leather, cigars and slight exotic notes, evolving nicely over half an hour in decanter. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, maturing, lovely if not a big Mouton. Enjoyed with filet mignon at Rotisserie Royal in Bernkastel with Fredrik. 91
