Vintage 2002

BORDEAUX: 2002 A wonderful vintage of pure, rich, elegant reds and soft, rounded whites.

An early start to flowering was followed by a variable summer with a bit of everything, from cold to hot to hot and back again. A long period of dry weather was beginning to be a problem when the rain of early September arrived, replenishing the vines. When the wind turned to the north, the grapes were dried and the harvest could begin on September 16 u...

Written Notes

A stunning effort for the vintage, that offers a rich, full-bodied, layered band of ripe currant and green and black olive, with hints of herb and spice. Expands into a long, deep, penetrating finish, echoing chocolate brownie. The best is yet to come for this wine.

The last wine of this young flight was a 2002 Mouton Rothschild, which got a few ‘best drinking’s from the crowd, including the Rapmaster. There were some green edges to its nose, ‘more approachable’ with long, fresh, zippy and creamy qualities. Ed noted its ‘crabapple’ (92).

Medium intense garnety red colour. Open and volaptuous nose shows rich and toasty aromas with dark chocolate, roasted coffee and new oak mixed with cassis,  black olives and soya. Full-bodied palate is flavourful. Lively acidity, gentle but firm tannins, supple texture, cassis and mocha flavours on medium-intense palate. Very open and mouthfilling wine with a flirty flair. Lingering finish leaves lovely dark chili chocolate flavours in the mouth. Superb wine in its optimum drinking window. Decant for 4 hours and serve 17-18°C with Entrecôte grillée et haricot verts et...voilà! JL 97p (4/2022)

A lovely nose of roasted berries, crushed and darkly maturing into black olives and fresh tea leads into a medium-weight palate. The fruit profile is cool and holds together with a tannic undercurrent that bodes well for the future.
