Château Mouton Rothschild 1984

Climatic conditions

Vintage 1984

Bordeaux / The year 1984 was statistically as poor as 1972. The cold and poor vintage was nevertheless transformed into moderate with skillful winegrowers using new production methods, tools and know-how. The vintage was overpriced after 1982. Written Notes

Perfect-looking bottle. Good deep colour. The bouquet was characterised by a scent of fruit with aromas of blackberry, bilberry and blackcurrant. Plump and quite tannic wine. On the palate, smooth tannins combine in a good structure with pleasant notes of pepper, oak, leather and earth. Considering the weak vintage, Mouton is relatively powerful and striking wine. This wine has passed its best but will still be agreeable for many years to come! Far more suitable for drinking with food than as an aperitif.

Wait a second, I’m not a food critic, and this weekend was about Mouton, and we picked up right where we left off the night before, except we were rocking to the Eighties. The 1984 Mouton Rothschild might not seem like an ‘I’m about to rock’ wine, but it was still soft, round and pleasant. It was a touch wheaty and weedy, showing pleasant purple and rock aromas. Its palate was smooth and easy, ‘not bad’ although there was a bit of cardboard flavors without being corked. Peter found it ‘sweet,’ and someone called it ‘a wet vintage’ (88).

Ruby, garnet rim. Rich, almost opulent with vanilla, fine cassis, cigars, perfumed and floral notes. Almost feels closed. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, a bit hollow mid-palate. Fresh red apple peel, softer texture, and I was far off Mouton. With answer in hand, my by far youngest 84 Mouton.
